Within our study area a total of 30 farms were selected that were grouped into 15 spatially neighbouring pairs, each consisting of one beef and one diary cattle farm. Plant species richness and species cover was estimated at eight grassland fields within each farm (n = 240). At the field scale our results revealed that species richness (α-diversity) was significantly higher in beef cattle grasslands. Soil nutrients (phosphorus and potassium content) did not differ significantly between fields of the two different farm types while the nitrogen input was significantly lower in the beef cattle fields. The rare case of soils unaffected by agricultural intensification found on a military training area (Grafenwoehr, Bavaria, Germany) was used as an opportunity to study the influence of soil chemical factors on plant species richness in two types of open habitats. Species richness of spermatophytes and soil chemical factors (pH, P, K, Mg ) were assessed on a total of 94 relevés situated in heathlands (40 relevés) and grasslands (54 relevés). Averaging over linear mixed models, we showed a distinct decline of plant species richness with decreasing pH in both habitats. Despite generally low soil P content, species richness declined strongly with increasing soil P in grassland. These fungi asymptomatically live inside the plant’s tissue enhancing resistance of their hosts to herbivores and abiotic stresses. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), infected with Neotyphodium lolii can be detrimental to grazing livestock causing a neural disease. This study aimed at determining the impact of grassland management on fungal incidence. In a rural district of Central Germany 90 sites differing in land use intensity (extensive, intermediate and intensive) and grassland use (pastures, mown pastures, and meadows) were investigated for the presence of N. lolii. Infections were detected in 41% of the sites sampled, but overall infection rates were low (5.8 ± 9.2%). Neither the intensity of land use nor the type of grassland influenced endophytic incidences. In contrast, the geology of the sampled sites had a significant impact on the incidence of N. lolii. Grass tillers collected from limestone sites showed significantly higher infection rates than from other soils. We hypothesize that the low field capacity and high amount of potassium on limestone sites favored the survival of infected grasses under drought stress. At the same time, adequate field data collection is of pivotal importance for national and international reporting obligations, such as the European Habitats Directive. We present a remote-sensing-based monitoring framework for a Natura 2000 site with a heterogeneous composition of different grassland communities, using the Random Forest algorithm. Automated training data selection was successfully implemented based on the Random Forest proximity measure (Overall Accuracy ranging from 77.5–86.5%). RapidEye acquisitions originating from the onset of vegetation (prespring and first spring) and senescence (late summer and first autumn) were identified as important phenological phases for mapping semi-natural grassland communities. How plant communities and soil P gradients are related in unimproved open habitats remains unclear. Aims: The aim of this article was to characterise the relationship between soil chemical parameters and plant species composition and richness in unimproved open habitats. Methods: The influence of soil chemical parameters (pH, P, K, Mg) on species composition was assessed, using data from 40 heathland and 54 grassland plots, by non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational multivariate analysis of variance. The relationship between soil chemical parameters and SR was tested by linear mixed effects models. Results: A direct relationship between heathland community composition and pH was observed, explaining 10% of variation in species composition, while P, Mg and pH together explained 17% of variation in grassland composition. In heathlands, SR increased with increasing pH, whereas in grasslands, SR decreased with increasing soil P. Conclusions: Soil chemical parameters were substantially related to plant community composition and richness. Can wild and free‐ranging ungulates, such as red deer, contribute to the preservation of characteristic open habitat plant communities? Location Grafenwöhr military training area, Germany. Methods We set up a grazing exclusion experiment in grasslands (lowland hay meadows) and heathlands (European dry heaths) and monitored structural vegetation characteristics (sward height, bare soil, biomass contribution of Calluna vulgaris, litter height, woody species individuals) in open and fenced plots within a three‐year study period. We compared plant species richness, diversity and community composition before and after the experimental period. Results In grasslands, plant species diversity was significantly reduced in fenced compared to open plots and in both habitat types, plant community composition responded to the exclusion of red deer. When fences prevented red deer grazing, increasing height of sward and litter in both habitat types as well as reduced cover of bare soil and increasing number of woody plant individuals in heathlands indicated beginning succession. In annually mown grasslands, where the regrowth provides attractive forage for red deer, the differences between open and fenced plots were most pronounced. Conclusions Overall, our results indicate that the conservation value of the studied open habitat types started to decrease after red deer exclusion. Grazing by wild red deer can hence provide benefits to vegetation structure and diversity and could therefore enrich the set of tools available for the conservation management of semi‐natural open vegetation types."],["dc.description.abstract","We tested if grazing by wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) can contribute to maintaining semi‐natural grasslands and heathlands.
