The nuclei were populated using the compound nucleus reaction Ni-58(Cr-50, 4p) and the gamma radiation from their decay was detected with the GASP spectrometer. A total of 34 reduced transition probabilities and limits for 18 further transitions were extracted providing a rich basis for a comparison with theoretical calculations. In addition, the lifetime data contained new information urging for a revision of the published level scheme of Cd-104. After film deposition and irradiations up to 4 x 10(14) ions/cm(2), we predominantly found the hcp phase (XRD, uniaxial MOKE pattern) with an in-plane magnetization. Three 77 nm thick Fe films containing a 15 nm Fe-57 marker layer at different depths were deposited on Si(100) substrates and irradiated under well defined mechanical stress with 200 keV Xe ions. The distribution of the spins in the sample plane was analyzed by Mossbauer spectroscopy and by tilting the sample toward the incident gamma beam and observing the variation in angle-dependent relative intensity of the sextet lines. For the sample with the sensitive marker layer in the middle of the ferromagnetic film, all spins were found to be oriented exactly along the mechanical stress axis. Ion-induced structural and magnetic modifications have been measured by grazing angle X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering and magneto-optical Kerr effect. In the case of permendur, the Xe-ion implantation first reduced the coercivity, because of stress relaxation, while higher ion fluences increased the coercivity due to pinning centers generated in the film. The ion irradiation aligned the in-plane easy axis of the magnetization along the direction of the external magnetic field during implantation. Phase shifts obtained from magnetic force microscopy confirmed these modifications.
