Research suggests that, at peak fertility, women tend to prefer men with characteristics that reflect good genes for short-term sexual relationships. However, existing findings have been criticized for methodological flexibility and failing attempts to replicate core results. In a large (N=157), pre-registered, within-subject study spanning two ovulatory cycles, we investigated cycle shifts in women’s mate preferences for masculine bodies. Using a large set of natural stimuli, we found that when fertile, women’s ratings of male bodies increased for sexual as well as for long-term attractiveness. Both effects were partially mediated by the estradiol-to-progesterone-ratio. Furthermore, moderation analyses revealed that both shifts were only evident in women in relationships, but not in singles. Contrary to previous findings, male masculine traits did not interact with cycle phase to predict attraction, indicating that women’s preferential priorities do not shift. Taken together, our results do not support women’s mate preference shifts, as assumed by the good genes ovulatory shift hypothesis, but are consistent with shifting motivational priorities throughout the cycle. Implications of these results for female estrus theories and methodological recommendations for future research are discussed."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1016/j.evolhumbehav.2018.03.007"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62014"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation.issn","1090-5138"],["dc.title","Fertile women evaluate male bodies as more attractive, regardless of masculinity"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

Specifically, it is proposed that the fertile window, marked by heightened estradiol and lower progesterone levels, is related to increased psychological motivation for intrasexual social comparison, leading to increasing competitiveness and jealousy. In this pre-registered, longitudinal study, 257 women provided saliva samples for hormone assays, rated the attractiveness of other women, and self-reported intrasexual competitiveness and jealousy across four testing sessions. Multilevel analyses revealed no compelling evidence for (hormone-related) cycle shifts in intrasexual competitiveness, attractiveness ratings, or jealousy. Rather, women higher in intrasexual competitiveness seem to rate other women as more attractive in general. We discuss how our results contribute to a growing body of literature suggesting that women’s social attitudes and preferences are more stable and less hormonally influenced than previously assumed."],["dc.description.sponsorship"," Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft https://doi.org/10.13039/501100001659"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1177/19485506221117712"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/114594"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI-Import GROB-600"],["dc.relation.eissn","1948-5514"],["dc.relation.issn","1948-5506"],["dc.rights.uri","https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/"],["dc.title","Women’s Intrasexual Competitiveness and Jealousy Across the Ovulatory Cycle: A Hormone-Based Study"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

Methods We tested for both longitudinal and cross-sectional relationships between salivary testosterone, cortisol, reported sexual desire and sociosexuality in a sample of 61 young adult men, each of whom was tested weekly on up to five occasions. Results Longitudinal analyses showed no clear relationships between steroid hormones and self-reported sexual desire or sociosexual orientation. Cross-sectional analyses showed no significant associations between average hormone levels and self-reported sexual desire. However, some aspects of sociosexuality, most notably desire for casual sex, were related to men’s average hormone levels. Men with higher average testosterone reported greater desire for casual sex, but only if they also had relatively low average cortisol levels. Conclusions Our results support a Dual Hormone account of men’s sociosexuality, in which the combined effects of testosterone and cortisol predict the extent of men’s interest in casual sex. However, we did not detect compelling evidence for an association of within-subject hormone shifts and sexual desire or sociosexual orientation."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1007/s40750-020-00148-y"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/86265"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI-Import GROB-425"],["dc.relation.eissn","2198-7335"],["dc.title","Are Sexual Desire and Sociosexual Orientation Related to Men’s Salivary Steroid Hormones?"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]
