This growing problem poses a growing challenge for novel medical strategies and is based on an increasingly aging population due to considerable improvements in general health care/treatment outcome as well as alterations in lifestyle. The prototype of an acute brain disease, stroke, constitutes together with cardiovascular diseases, the second leading cause of death after cancer in industrialized nations.
