Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was determined by hemispheric photography, and estimates of fine root biomass of the overstory trees were used as an inverse proportional surrogate for belowground resource availability. For recently germinated seedlings growing under the canopy of Picea abies (L.) Karst., belowground resource availability affected height growth more than light. During subsequent stages of seedling development, apart from initial seedling size, PAR increasingly determined seedling growth. Besides initial size, seedling age determined the effects of above- and belowground resources on seedling height growth. In seedlings identical in initial size but differing in age, the increase in height growth with increasing PAR was greater in older seedlings than in younger seedlings. The ranking of seedling height by year showed that small differences in size at the end of the first growing season resulted in continuously increasing differences during the following years. This study tested whether the growth of sown beech seedlings differs from that of planted seedlings of two stock types. Therefore at two experimental sites repeated measurements were made of height, stem and first order branch diameter on sown and planted seedlings over a period of nine years. The results showed that the growth responses of planted and sown seedlings to the environmental conditions below the canopy of overstorey Norway spruce were rather similar. No differences between planted and sown seedlings were found in their diameter and their estimated aboveground dry weight. For all three batches the ratio between the estimated branch dry weight and the estimated main stem dry weight (branch-shoot-ratio (BSR)) was increased with age. Due to intraspecific competition BSR was lowest for the sown seedlings irrespective of their age. Differences in growth dynamics between planted and sown seedlings were found. For example, differences in the height or the estimated aboveground woody dry weight between sown and planted seedlings at a given age were not constant. However, many direct seedings of beech seeds provided unsatisfactory results without a clear explanation for this lack of success. In order to identify the main factors determining seed germination under the canopy of pure Norway spruce stands, three different treatments of direct seeding were tested. These treatments were: (i) direct seeding without additional measure (control), (ii) direct seeding and liming, and (iii) direct seeding covered with beech leaf litter. The experiment consists of two stands. Direct seeding was carried out on six plots per treatment and stand. Each plot includes 81 sample units of 0.5 m2 upon each of which 15 g of seeds were sown. The germinative capacity of the seeds was pre-determined (68%). Germination of the seeds was recorded repeatedly from May to September 1997. On the related sample units canopy density was measured and fine root biomass of the overstorey trees was estimated. There was a significant difference in seedling number between the two stands. The number of seedlings did not increase by liming (coincident with seeding). In contrast, the covering of seeds with leaf litter caused a remarkable and significant increase in the number of germinated seeds. As ANCOVA showed, models including canopy density or estimated fine root biomass of the overstorey trees explained 72 and 52% of the variation in mean seedling number per plot. As canopy density as well as estimated fine root biomass determine the water content of the soil, it can be assumed that the germination of beech seeds originating from direct seedings under the canopy of pure spruce stands depends to a great extent on soil moisture at the time when the direct seeding is carried out, as well as the weeks following seeding.
