Only recently, however, have technological advances such as the mobile internet begun to foster new carsharing business models, thereby increasing the attractiveness of carsharing for both operators and users. So far, these new business models were typically classified as roundtrip, point to point, nonprofit/cooperative, and P2P carsharing. However, not all operators fit into these rather broad groups; for instance, the carsharing company CiteeCar combines elements of several archetypes. Furthermore, important differences among the various design options of operators belonging to the same type are not addressed by this distinction. For example, the largest P2P carsharing companies, Getaround and Turo, employ very different business models: Getaround provides automatic access kits while Turo does not. Thus they address different use cases and customers. To account for such differentiation, we complement these archetypes by a classification scheme for carsharing business models, i.e., a taxonomy, listing the most important dimensions and corresponding characteristics. We proceed in three major steps: First, we create a global database of carsharing companies. Second, we use the database to create a taxonomy of carsharing business models. Third, we empirically derive more fine grained archetypes from the taxonomy. Our resulting framework allows researchers and practitioners to more accurately analyze and describe existing carsharing systems. Furthermore, it can be applied for business model innovation by copying successful business model patterns or systemtaically discovering new configurations."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1007/978-3-658-18613-5_22"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/15556"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.publisher","Springer Gabler"],["dc.publisher.place","Wiesbaden"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-3-658-18613-5"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-3-658-18612-8"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Innovative Produkte und Dienstleistungen in der Mobilität: Technische und betriebswirtschaftliche Aspekte"],["dc.title","Design Options for Carsharing Business Models"],["dc.type","book_chapter"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2009Conference Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.artnumber","388"],["dc.contributor.author","Nickerson, Robert C."],["dc.contributor.author","Varshney, Upkar"],["dc.contributor.author","Muntermann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Isaac, Henri"],["dc.date.accessioned","2020-02-06T14:20:13Z"],["dc.date.available","2020-02-06T14:20:13Z"],["dc.date.issued","2009"],["dc.description.abstract","The complexity of the information systems field often lends itself to classification schemes, or taxonomies, which provide ways to understand the similarities and differences among objects under study. Developing a taxonomy, however, is a complex process that is often done in an ad hoc way. This research-in-progress paper uses the design science paradigm to develop a systematic method for taxonomy development in information systems. The method we propose uses an indicator or operational level model that combines both empirical to deductive and deductive to empirical approaches. We evaluate this method by using it to develop a taxonomy of mobile applications, which we have chosen because of their ever-increasing number and variety. The resulting taxonomy contains seven dimensions with fifteen characteristics. We demonstrate the usefulness of this taxonomy by analyzing a range of current and proposed mobile applications. From the results of this analysis we identify combinations of characteristics where applications are missing and thus are candidates for new and potentially useful applications."],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62959"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation.conference","17th ECIS 2009"],["dc.relation.eventend","2009-06-10"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Verona, Italy"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2009-06-08"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-88-6129-391-5"],["dc.relation.ispartof","ECIS 2009 Proceedings."],["dc.title","Taxonomy Development in Information Systems: Developing a Taxonomy of Mobile Applications"],["dc.type","conference_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2010Conference Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.artnumber","125"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Americas Conference on Information Systems"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","16"],["dc.contributor.author","Nickerson, Robert C."],["dc.contributor.author","Muntermann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Varshney, Upkar"],["dc.date.accessioned","2020-02-06T13:36:39Z"],["dc.date.available","2020-02-06T13:36:39Z"],["dc.date.issued","2010"],["dc.description.abstract","The complexity of the information systems field often lends itself to classification schemes, or taxonomies, which provide ways to understand the similarities and differences among objects under study. Developing a taxonomy, however, is a complex process that is often done in an ad hoc way. This research-in-progress paper surveys 65 papers in information systems, computer science, and business to identify methods used for taxonomy development. Our analysis of this survey indicates that there is considerable interest in taxonomies, but formal development procedures are not always used. We conclude that such a procedure would be beneficial for the information systems discipline, and we present a problem statement for defining a procedure. We also describe our current research on this problem, which we hope will lead to an approach for the systematic development of taxonomies. As both taxonomies (i.e., models) and taxonomy development procedures (i.e., methods) represent artifacts, this paper serves to illustrate an analysis that provides a foundation for applying the design science research paradigm and to theorize about IT artifacts observed (i.e., instantiations)."],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62957"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.publisher","Association for Information Systems AIS Electronic Library (AISeL)"],["dc.relation.conference","Sixteenth Americas Conference on Information Systems"],["dc.relation.eventend","2010-08-15"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Lima, Peru"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2006-08-12"],["dc.title","Taxonomy Development in Information Systems: A Literature Survey and Problem Statement"],["dc.type","conference_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2015Conference Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Americas Conference on Information Systems"],["dc.contributor.author","Varshney, Upkar"],["dc.contributor.author","Nickerson, Robert C."],["dc.contributor.author","Muntermann, Jan"],["dc.date.accessioned","2020-01-31T11:14:02Z"],["dc.date.available","2020-01-31T11:14:02Z"],["dc.date.issued","2015"],["dc.description.abstract","Developing IS theories has been an important goal for many IS researchers. Towards that end, we discuss how taxonomic theory can be developed. According to Gregor, taxonomic theories are theories for analyzing, which she classifies as Type I Theory. More specifically, we show that some taxonomies, after meeting some conditions, can lead to taxonomic theory. Building upon a method for taxonomy development, we present a prescriptive framework for the development of taxonomic theory, which includes evaluation criteria for theorizing outcomes. To illustrate this, we present a taxonomy of an ISrelated phenomenon (mobile applications) and then show how the taxonomy satisfies taxonomic theory requirements. In addition, we show how the development of taxonomic theory helps to analyze IS-related phenomena and how it can form the basis for more comprehensive IS-related explanatory, predictive or design theories."],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62918"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.publisher","Association for Information Systems ( AIS )"],["dc.relation.conference","Twenty-first Americas Conference on Information Systems"],["dc.relation.eventend","2015-08-15"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Fajardo, Puerto Rico"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2015-08-13"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-1-5108-1493-6"],["dc.relation.ispartof","21st Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2015)"],["dc.title","Towards the Development of a Taxonomic Theory"],["dc.type","conference_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2013Conference Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","1"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Americas Conference on Information Systems"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","10"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","19"],["dc.contributor.author","Varshney, Upkar"],["dc.contributor.author","Nickerson, Robert C."],["dc.contributor.author","Muntermann, Jan"],["dc.date.accessioned","2020-02-03T14:21:56Z"],["dc.date.available","2020-02-03T14:21:56Z"],["dc.date.issued","2013"],["dc.description.abstract","Health-IT is attracting increasing attention in the research community. To understand the relevant constructs and the relationships among them, many authors present taxonomies or typologies for classifying different things in health-IT. Even with much attention to health-IT, there is still limited theoretical knowledge in this field. This may be attributed to our observation that the process of developing taxonomies has not been adequately addressed in the health-IT literature. In this paper we address this challenge by (a) a comprehensive literature survey that shows a high diversity in the field and that the related discussion of the structural nature has largely been ad hoc, (b) presenting methods for developing health-IT taxonomies, and, (c) contributing to the theoretical foundations of the field by a taxonomy for health-IT applications."],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62942"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation.conference","the Nineteenth Americas Conference on Information Systems"],["dc.relation.eventend","2013-08-17"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Chicago, Illinois"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2013-08-15"],["dc.title","Taxonomy Development in Health-IT"],["dc.type","conference_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2013Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","336"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","3"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","European Journal of Information Systems"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","359"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","22"],["dc.contributor.author","Nickerson, Robert C."],["dc.contributor.author","Varshney, Upkar"],["dc.contributor.author","Muntermann, Jan"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-08-23T15:20:19Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-08-23T15:20:19Z"],["dc.date.issued","2013"],["dc.description.abstract","A fundamental problem in many disciplines is the classification of objects in a domain of interest into a taxonomy. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed blueprint is built on state-of-the-art research on digital business model innovation and a rigorous taxonomy-building approach. The process is demonstrated through a simplified case study of a passenger transport company. Findings: The process involves three steps: identifying existing products and services, deconstructing business models and discovering new configurations. The managers from the case company very positively evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed procedure.
