Using \r\nfield survey data conducted in and around the city of Bangalore, India in 2018, we \r\nexamine the patterns of DBM among women, young children (0-6 years), older \r\nchildren (7-18 years) and intrahousehold DBM between mother and children. A \r\nunique aspect of the survey is that it is conducted in an area undergoing rapid \r\nurbanization, which is one of the factors responsible for DBM and can inform on the \r\nfuture of DBM in India. Compared to undernutrition, the prevalence of over-nutrition \r\nis much higher in our study area. We find that, like other developing countries, the \r\nsocio-economic distance in prevalence of under and over nutrition among women has \r\ndecreased over time. Overnutrition among women is no longer an urban \r\nphenomenon. Similar trends were observed for older children. For the younger \r\nchildren, on the other hand, the socio-economic and locational differences persist, \r\nsuggesting that this age group is not witnessing nutritional transition yet. \r\nIntrahousehold burden of DBM has also increased over time and the risk increases \r\nwith maternal education. Though under and over nutrition are opposite in nature, \r\nboth have several common drivers, suggesting a possibility of integrated approach to \r\ntackle DBM. Several existing programmes in India such as ICDS, PDS, school meal \r\nprogram provide excellent infrastructure to roll out policies and interventions, \r\nespecially diet-based programmes, aimed at both under and over nutrition."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1159/000507521"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/84256"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation.doi","10.1159/isbn.978-3-318-06698-2"],["dc.relation.eisbn","978-3-318-06698-2"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-3-318-06697-5"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Hidden Hunger and the Transformation of Food Systems: How to Combat the Double Burden of Malnutrition?"],["dc.relation.ispartofseries","World Review of Nutrition and Dietetics; 121"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Department für Volkswirtschaftslehre (VWL)"],["dc.title","The Double Burden of Malnutrition in Bangalore, India"],["dc.type","book_chapter"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.version","submitted_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI
