This study aimed to correct for this market failure by establishing a regionally-scaled market-based payment scheme for ecosystem services. Payments to farmers were linked to ecological goods representing differently ranked quality-levels of vascular plant diversity that were used as proxies for ecological services derived from managed grasslands. To reward the provision of ecological goods, we designed a novel market-based payment scheme that comprised a combination of a payment by results approach with an auction mechanism. Our results demonstrated that an appropriately designed payment scheme at a regional scale could support farming systems that are managed for delivering ecological goods in addition to the production of market goods such as food and fibre. Existing agri-environmental programmes lack efficiency in nature conservation purposes, as well as acceptance among farmers and population. For this reason, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Goettingen has developed and implemented a new regional approach in the district of Northeim, Lower Saxony16. Twenty-eight farmers have participated successfully in an auction, offering their ecological services concerning the production of species-rich grasslands. Differentiated prices have been paid for differentiated ecological goods, and 228 ha of species-rich grassland could be remunerated. Farmers began to appreciate their former non-commodity products as valuable goods. There is an urgent need to determine the underlying factors that control vascular plant species richness and composition in managed grasslands. In this study, 117 grasslands were sampled using standardised methods. Explanatory variables were recorded for each grassland site, reflecting the local field management, site-specific environmental conditions and large-scale spatial trends. Using variation partitioning methods, we determined the pure and shared effects of these three sets of explanatory variables on the plant species richness and composition in grasslands. Most of the explained variation in plant species richness was related to the joint effect of local field management and environmental variables. However, the applied variation partitioning approach revealed that the pure effect of spatial variables contributed relatively little to explaining variation in both the plant species richness and species composition. The largest fractions of explained variation in plant species composition were accounted for by the pure effects of environmental and local field management variables. Moreover, the results revealed that the main mechanisms by which these sets of explanatory variables affect plant species vary according to the type of management regime under study.
