Lately, evidence has accumulated that large areas of grey matter are affected in multiple sclerosis patients. Recent findings Findings in post-mortem brain tissue support the notion that cortical demyelination is frequent and extensive, especially in patients with chronic multiple sclerosis. Cortical lesions differ from white matter lesions with respect to inflammatory cell infiltration, gliosis, and remyelination. Thus, differences in cortical and white matter lesion pathogenesis have been proposed. Experimental models suggest a decisive role for antimyelin antibodies in cortical demyelination. Topical studies focus on damage to neurons, dendrites, and synapses in cortical multiple sclerosis lesions. Improved imaging techniques for the detection of cortical lesions are currently developed and will provide the basis for future clinicopathological correlative studies. Summary In summary, recent years have opened our eyes to the extensive grey matter involvement in multiple sclerosis. Studies on the pathogenesis of cortical demyelination, cortical damage, and repair will elucidate basic principles of multiple sclerosis lesion formation. However, more sensitive imaging tools are required to study the impact of cortical lesions on clinical symptoms, disability, and disease progression."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1097/01.wco.0000318863.65635.9a"],["dc.identifier.isi","000256183400002"],["dc.identifier.pmid","18451703"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/85418"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI-Import GROB-425"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Lippincott Williams & Wilkins"],["dc.relation.issn","1350-7540"],["dc.title","Cortical pathology in multiple sclerosis"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI PMID PMC WOS2017Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","737"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","6"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Brain Pathology"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","747"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","27"],["dc.contributor.author","Albert, Monika"],["dc.contributor.author","Barrantes-Freer, Alonso"],["dc.contributor.author","Lohrberg, Melanie"],["dc.contributor.author","Antel, Jack P."],["dc.contributor.author","Prineas, John W."],["dc.contributor.author","Palkovits, Miklós"],["dc.contributor.author","Wolff, Joachim R."],["dc.contributor.author","Brück, Wolfgang"],["dc.contributor.author","Stadelmann, Christine"],["dc.date.accessioned","2022-03-01T11:47:07Z"],["dc.date.available","2022-03-01T11:47:07Z"],["dc.date.issued","2017"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/bpa.12450"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/103917"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI-Import GROB-531"],["dc.relation.issn","1015-6305"],["dc.title","Synaptic pathology in the cerebellar dentate nucleus in chronic multiple sclerosis"],["dc.title.alternative","Synaptic pathology in the cerebellar dentate nucleus"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2007Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","129"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","2"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Brain Pathology"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","138"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","17"],["dc.contributor.author","Albert, Monika"],["dc.contributor.author","Antel, Jack P."],["dc.contributor.author","Brueck, Wolfgang"],["dc.contributor.author","Stadelmann, Christine"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-11-07T11:03:24Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-11-07T11:03:24Z"],["dc.date.issued","2007"],["dc.description.abstract","Recent studies revealed prominent cortical demyelination in patients with chronic multiple sclerosis (MS). Demyelination in white matter lesions is frequently accompanied by remyelination. This repair process, however, often remains incomplete and restricted to the lesion border. In the present study, we examined the frequency and extent of remyelination in cortical and white matter lesions in autopsy brain tissue of 33 patients with chronic MS. The majority of patients (29 of 33) harbored cortical demyelination. Remyelination of cortical lesions was identified light microscopically by the presence of thin and irregularly arranged myelin sheaths, and confirmed by electron microscopy. Extensive remyelination was found in 18%, remyelination restricted to the lesion border in 54%, and no remyelination in 28% of cortical lesions. A direct comparison of the extent of remyelination in white matter and cortical lesions of the same patients revealed that remyelination of cortical lesions was consistently more extensive. In addition, g-ratios of fibers in areas of \"normal appearing cortex\" yielded values consistent with remyelination. Our data confirm the high prevalence of cortical demyelination in chronic MS and imply that the propensity to remyelinate is high in cortical MS lesions."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/j.1750-3639.2006.00043.x"],["dc.identifier.isi","000245118600001"],["dc.identifier.pmid","17388943"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/51610"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Blackwell Publishing"],["dc.relation.issn","1015-6305"],["dc.title","Extensive cortical remyelination in patients with chronic multiple sclerosis"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI PMID PMC WOS
