Twenty stone replicas of a metallic master die (prepared upper premolar) were scanned and divided into two groups. Group 1 (𝑛� = 10) was used for a pilot test to determine the design parameters for best marginal accuracy. Group 2 (𝑛� = 10) was used to fabricate 10 specimens from the following materials with one identical CAD/CAM system (GAMMA 202, Wissner GmbH, Goettingen, Germany): A = commercially pure (cp) titanium, B = cobalt-chromium alloy, C = yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), and D = leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics. Copings from group 2 were evaluated for the mean marginal gap size (MeanMG) and average maximum marginal gap size (AMaxMG) with a light microscope in the “as-machined” state. The effect of the material on the marginal accuracy was analyzed by multiple pairwise comparisons (Mann–Whitney, 𝑈�-test, 𝛼� = 0.05, adjusted by Bonferroni-Holmes method). MeanMG values were as follows: A: 46.92 ± 23.12 𝜇�m, B: 48.37 ± 29.72 𝜇�m, C: 68.25 ± 28.54 𝜇�m, and D: 58.73 ± 21.15 𝜇�m. The differences in the MeanMG values proved to be significant for groups A/C (𝑝� = 0.0024), A/D (𝑝� = 0.008), and B/C (𝑝� = 0.0332). AMaxMG values (A: 91.54 ± 23.39 𝜇�m, B: 96.86 ± 24.19 𝜇�m, C: 120.66 ± 32.75 𝜇�m, and D: 100.22 ± 10.83 𝜇�m) revealed no ignificant differences. Members of the German Federal Armed Forces who had TP (group TP) and a matched control group (group C) volunteered to take part in the study. The time in situ, localization and material of TP were documented. Dental examinations included DMF-T, oral hygiene, enamel fissures (EF), enamel cracks (EC) and recessions. Statistical analysis was determined by chi (2) test and the t test. Both groups had 46 male subjects (mean age 22.1 years). The piercings had been in situ for 3.8 +/- 3.1 years. Subjects in the TP group had a total of 1,260 teeth. Twenty-nine subjects had 115 teeth (9.1%) with EF (67% lingual). In group C (1,243 teeth), 30 subjects had 60 teeth with EF (4.8%, 78% vestibular) (p < 0.01). Thirty-eight subjects belonging to group TP had EC in 186 teeth (15%). In group C, 26 subjects with 56 teeth (4.5%) were affected by EC (p < 0.001). Twenty-seven subjects in group TP had 97 teeth (7.7%) with recessions. Lingual surfaces of anterior teeth in the lower jaw were affected most frequently (74%). In group C, 8 subjects had 19 teeth (1.5%) with recessions (65% vestibular). Differences between the two groups were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Tongue piercing is correlated with an increased occurrence of enamel fissures, enamel cracks and lingual recessions. This retrospective study aims at the evaluation of implant-supported overdentures (IODs) supported by ceramo-galvanic double crowns (CGDCs: zirconia primary crowns + galvano-formed secondary crown). MATERIALS AND METHODS. In a private practice, 14 patients were restored with 18 IODs (mandible: 11, maxilla: 7) retained by CGDCs on 4 - 8 implants and annually evaluated for technical and/or biological failures/complications. RESULTS. One of the 86 inserted implants failed during the healing period (cumulative survival rate (CSR) implants: 98.8%). During the prosthetic functional period (mean: 5.9 +/- 2.2 years), 1 implant demonstrated an abutment fracture (CSR-abutments: 98.2%), and one case of peri-implantitis was detected. All IODs remained in function (CSR-denture: 100%). A total of 15 technical complications required interventions to maintain function (technical complication rate: 0.178 treatments/patients/year). CONCLUSION. Considering the small sample size, the use of CGDCs for the attachment of IODs is possible without an increased risk of technical complications. The study focused on the survival of the restoration (in situ criterion) and the success of the ceramic veneers (no defect). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five patients with a maximum of two missing teeth and an antagonistic dentition were treated at the Department of Prosthodontics, University of Goettigen, with 99 posterior FPDs. Fifty-one specimens (experimental group) were veneered with an experimental ceramic suitable for titanium and zirconia frameworks (thermal expansion coefficient [TEC]: 8.5 microm/m K); 48 restorations (Ceram-S group) were veneered with a commercially available low-fusing ceramic optimized for zirconia frameworks (TEC: 9.5 microm/m K). All restorations were luted with zinc-phosphate cement. Statistical analysis was performed according to the Kaplan-Meier method; time-dependent success rates of the different types of ceramic veneers were analyzed using the log-rank test. RESULTS: Seven restorations were lost: 4 due to technical complications and 3 due to biologic complications. The overall survival rate after 48 months was 94% (Kaplan-Meier analysis). Twenty-three events required clinical intervention for restoration maintenance: 13 ceramic veneer chippings (polishing), 6 losses of retention (recementation), 3 caries lesions (filling therapy), and 1 loss of vitality (endodontic treatment). Between the two groups of veneering materials, no significant difference in the probability for success was determined (log-rank test, P=.81). CONCLUSIONS: Within a mean observation period of 4 years, sufficient survival rates for zirconia-based posterior FPDs could be verified. The PSI provides information on the periodontal situation and allows a first estimation of the treatment required. The dental panoramic tomography (DPT) indicates the proximal bone loss, thus also allowing conclusions on the periodontal situation. In this study, the results of both methods in determining the periodontal situation are compared. Methods: The clinical examination covered DMF-T, QHI, and PSI scores at four proximal sites per tooth; the examining dentist was unaware of the radiographic finding. Based on the PSI scores, the findings were diagnosed as follows: score 0 - 2 \"no periodontitis\", score 3 and 4 \"periodontitis\". Independent of the locality and time of the clinical evaluation, two dentists examined the DPTs of the subjects. The results were classified as follows: no bone loss = \"no periodontitis\", and bone loss = \"periodontitis\". Results: 112 male subjects (age 18 to 58, circle divide 37.7 +/- 8 years) were examined. Regarding the PSI, 17 subjects were diagnosed \"no periodontitis\" and 95 subjects \"periodontitis\". According to the evaluation of the DPTs, 70 subjects were diagnosed \"no periodontitis\" and 42 \"periodontitis\". A comparison of both methods revealed that the diagnosis \"no periodontitis\" corresponded in 17 cases and \"periodontitis\" in 42 cases (53%). In 47% (53 cases) the results were not congruent. The difference between both methods was statistically significant (p < 0.001; kappa = 0.194). To evaluate the effects of different abutment geometries in combination with varying luting agents and the effectiveness of different cleaning methods (prior to re-cementation) regarding the retentiveness of zirconia copings on implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Implants were embedded in resin blocks. Three groups of titanium abutments (pre-fabricated, height: 7.5 mm, taper: 5.7; customized-long, height: 6.79 mm, taper: 4.8; customized-short, height: 4.31 mm, taper: 4.8) were used for luting of CAD/CAM-fabricated zirconia copings with a semi-permanent (Telio CS) and a provisional cement (Temp Bond NE). Retention forces were evaluated using a universal testing machine. Furthermore, the influence of cleaning methods (manually, manually in combination with ultrasonic bath or sandblasting) prior to re-cementation with a provisional cement (Temp Bond NE) was investigated with the pre-fabricated titanium abutments (height: 7.5 mm, taper: 5.7) and SEM-analysis of inner surfaces of the copings was performed. Significant differences were determined via twoway ANOVA. RESULTS. Significant interactions between abutment geometry and luting agent were observed. Temp Bond NE showed the highest level of retentiveness on customized-long abutments, but was negatively affected by other abutment geometries. In contrast, luting with Telio CS demonstrated consistent results irrespective of the varying abutment geometries. Manual cleaning in combination with an ultrasonic bath was the only cleaning method tested prior to re-cementation that revealed retentiveness levels not inferior to primary cementation. CONCLUSION. No superiority for one of the two cements could be demonstrated because their influences on retentive strength are also depending on abutment geometry. This retrospective study evaluated the outcome of implant-retained overdentures (IODs) after 5-19 years of clinical function. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A retrospective analysis of patient files was performed referring to 27 patients who received 36 IODs with 3 different bar designs (group A=prefabricated round bars, n=7; group B=one-piece anterior milled bars, n=20; and group C=two bilaterally placed milled bars, n=9) in the mandible (n=24) and/or in the maxilla (n=12). The analysis focused on the survival and success rates (according to Kaplan-Meier) of the implants and prostheses. Technical complication rates for each type of restoration were analyzed and compared via one-way ANOVA and the Chi-squared test. The prevalence of peri-implantitis (radiographic bone loss >= 3.5 mm) was evaluated by digital analysis of panoramic radiographs taken postoperative (baseline) and after 5-19 years of clinical function (follow-up). RESULTS. The mean observational time was 7.3 years. The survival rates of the prostheses and implants were 100% and 97.7%, respectively. Technical complications occurred more frequently in group A (mean: 3.5 during observational time) than in the other two groups (B: 0.8; C: 1.0). However, this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.58). Peri-implantitis was diagnosed for 12.4% of the implants in 37% of the patients. CONCLUSION. Bar-retained IODs are an adequate treatment option for edentulous jaws. These restorations may exhibit high implant/prosthesis survival rates (>97%), and a limited incidence of technical complications after a mean observational period of >7 years. For periodontal disease, investigations have been restricted to tissue samples and five miRNAs, that is, miR-142-3p, miR-146a, miR-155, miR-203, and miR-223, were repeatedly validated in vivo and in vitro by different validation methods. Particularly noticeable are the small sample sizes, different internal controls, and different case definitions of periodontitis in in vivo studies. Beside of that, the validated miRNAs are associated with inflammation and therefore with various diseases. Furthermore, several studies successfully explored the use of salivary miRNA species for the diagnosis of oral cancer. Different cancer types were investigated and heterogeneous methodology was used; moreover, no overlap of results was found. In conclusion, five miRNAs have consistently been reported for periodontitis; however, their disease specificity, detectability, and expression in saliva and their importance as noninvasive markers are questionable. In principle, a salivary miRNA diagnostic method seems feasible.
