Accounting for these characteristics may substantially improve the ability of stated choice models to represent preference heterogeneity. In this regard, we analyzed the influence of respondent attitudes on the valuation of river ecosystem quality attributes affected by pulp mill wastewater in two central Chilean watersheds. We applied the Choice Experiment (CE) method to assess preferences on river pollution risk, water quality effects, threatened species and the yield in local fisheries. The payment vehicle was an additional annual charge to the electricity bill. All three environmental attributes and the payment attribute were highly significant determinants of choice (P <= 0.001). A calculated mean WTP value for an optimistic policy scenario was 13 USD/year per household. As hypothesized, attitudes influenced stated respondent preferences with some differences between the two studied watersheds. Overall, our findings suggest that attitudinal variables deserve more attention in the analysis of preferences for water resource improvements in emerging economies."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.4067/S0718-16202016000100011"],["dc.identifier.eissn","0718-1620"],["dc.identifier.isi","000384739400011"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/78859"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI Import GROB-354"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Pontificia Univ Catolica Chile, Fac Agronomia Ingenieria Forestal"],["dc.relation.issn","0718-1620"],["dc.rights","CC BY 4.0"],["dc.title","Attitudinal determinants of willingness-to-pay for river ecosystem improvements in central Chile: A choice experiment"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI WOS2007Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","4973"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","12"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","4978"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","104"],["dc.contributor.author","Steffan-Dewenter, Ingolf"],["dc.contributor.author","Kessler, Michael"],["dc.contributor.author","Barkmann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Bos, Merijn M."],["dc.contributor.author","Buchori, Damayanti"],["dc.contributor.author","Erasmi, Stefan"],["dc.contributor.author","Faust, Heiko"],["dc.contributor.author","Gerold, Gerhard"],["dc.contributor.author","Glenk, Klaus"],["dc.contributor.author","Gradstein, S. Potentially, ecosystems show nonlinear responses to land-use intensification that would open management options with limited ecological losses but satisfying economic gains. However, multidisciplinary studies to quantify ecological losses and socioeconomic tradeoffs under different management options are rare. Here, we evaluate opposing land use strategies in cacao agroforestry in Sulawesi, Indonesia, by using data on species richness of nine plant and animal taxa, six related ecosystem functions, and on socioeconomic drivers of agroforestry expansion. Expansion of cacao cultivation by 230% in the last two decades was triggered not only by economic market mechanisms, but also by rarely considered cultural factors. Transformation from near-primary forest to agroforestry had little effect on overall species richness, but reduced plant biomass and carbon storage by ≈75% and species richness of forest-using species by ≈60%. In contrast, increased land use intensity in cacao agroforestry, coupled with a reduction in shade tree cover from 80% to 40%, caused only minor quantitative changes in biodiversity and maintained high levels of ecosystem functioning while doubling farmers' net income. However, unshaded systems further increased income by ≈40%, implying that current economic incentives and cultural preferences for new intensification practices put shaded systems at risk. We conclude that low-shade agroforestry provides the best available compromise between economic forces and ecological needs. Certification schemes for shade-grown crops may provide a market-based mechanism to slow down current intensification trends."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1073/pnas.0608409104"],["dc.identifier.gro","3148984"],["dc.identifier.scopus","2-s2.0-34247633507"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5623"],["dc.identifier.url","http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-34247633507&partnerID=MN8TOARS"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","Faust Crossref Import"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.relation.eissn","1091-6490"],["dc.relation.issn","0027-8424"],["dc.title","Tradeoffs between income, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning during tropical rainforest conversion and agroforestry intensification"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2010Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","114"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","2"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","GAIA - Ecological Perspectives for Science and Society"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","121"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","19"],["dc.contributor.author","Rajmis, Sandra"],["dc.contributor.author","Barkmann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Marggraf, Rainer"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-11-07T08:47:42Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-11-07T08:47:42Z"],["dc.date.issued","2010"],["dc.description.abstract","According to the German Advisory Council on Global Change, the so-called Pythia and Pandora risk types pose particular challenges to environmental management due to their potentially catastrophic nature. It ascertains the parental risk reduction behaviour operationalised as parental additional willingness to pay (aWTP) for special child products. It investigates the interrelationships between parental risk perceptions and risk reduction behaviour. Design/methodology/approach - Altogether, 771 questionnaires were sent to 17 day-care centres in Lower Saxony, Germany. A total of 238 questionnaires were completed. The Perceived Food Risk Index was used to identify the main dimensions of parental risk perception of mycotoxins. Open and closed questions measured aWTP for risk reduction and parental risk estimates. Findings - The respondents believed that mycotoxins posed a moderate health risk for children in Germany. However, parental risk assessment was found to be subjected to an optimistic bias. Nevertheless, the parents were willing to pay a premium to protect their children's health against mycotoxins. Parental risk perception of mycotoxins could be described by two dimensions named \"Dread\" and \"Control\". \"Dread\" and \"Control\" predicted aWTP for risk reduction as well as being involved in the genesis of optimistic bias. Research limitations/implications - Information regarding mycotoxins provided in the questionnaire probably influenced parental responses. This limits the generalisation of the findings. Originality/value - This research provides initial findings regarding parental risk perceptions of mycotoxins and its impact on risk reduction behaviour. Against the background of various challenges faced by agriculture, the conference ad-dressed the question of recent theories and methods available and how they may benefit agricultural economics and social sciences research. The present article provides an overview of the conference program and summarizes the most important results and discussions. The conference started with two pre-conference activities which dealt with animal welfare and gravity models in international agricultural trade. The plenary session addressed the overall topic of the conference, i.e., new methods and challenges relevant for economic and social sciences in agriculture. During the conference, 36 submitted papers and 28 poster presentations provided insight into the overall topic from different perspectives. Also, state-of-the-art and future perspectives of evolutionary approaches in agricultural economics and social sciences as well as the most recent Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform were discussed in two self-organized sessions. Finally, a panel discussion at the end of the conference gave representatives from politics and science the opportunity to discuss the situation of agricultural research situated between methodological excellence and public perceptions. Most of the contributions summarized in this article are published in the conference proceedings (\"Schriften der Gesellschaft fur Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften des Landbaues e.V.\", Volume 50). We conclude that, in 2014, the Annual Conference of the German Society of Economic and Social Sciences in Agriculture again attracted much attention and provided convincing results and discussions. It impressively illustrated the extent to which new theories and methods are already being applied in agricultural economics and social sciences research today. The numerous discussions also revealed that this is a very dynamic field and that interesting developments can be expected in the future. Emphasis shall be put on understanding the many challenges which agriculture faces and on pointing out potential solutions or future perspectives. Currently, farmers receive compensation payments for ecological goods and services in the framework of agri-environmental programs, which are predominantly action-orientated. For further development of these programs, however, the social acceptance and the efficiency of the programs have to be improved. This paper describes a decentralised outcome-based payment scheme which meets these requirements: Within this payment scheme, farmers will be rewarded for the outcomes of ecological services. These outcomes are ecological goods that represent plant biodiversity. The payment scheme takes into consideration fundamental criteria of market economy such as supply and demand. On a voluntary basis, farmers may offer ecological goods e. g., through a bidding procedure. However, empirical data on the actual economic appreciation of local mitigation and adaptation measures expressed as citizen willingness-to-pay (WTP) are scarce. In this paper, we report results of a preference survey using a choice experiment (CE) that quantifies economic preferences for biodiversity-based climate change mitigation and adaptation in the region surrounding Hainich National Park (Thuringia, Germany). A representative sample of 302 respondents-the majority of them frequent Hainich forest visitors-was interviewed in autumn 2006. Nested logit analysis showed that respondents state a substantially positive WTP for climate change mitigation by afforestation (p < 0.001). If converted to WTP for an additional sequestration of carbon that average German citizens emit as CO(2), a monetary value of 7.34 (sic) yr(-1) t C(-1) is obtained. For increasing forest resistance and resilience against insect pests and storms (climate change adaptation) a WTP of 27.54 (sic) yr(-1) (p < 0.001) is obtained, and 16.83 (sic) yr(-1) (p < 0.001) is obtained for increasing the general resilience and resistance of forest ecosystems to environmental stressors. Respondents support moderate programs to eradicate invasive plants when compared to more aggressive eradication measures. Due to the lack of comparable studies, it can only be conservatively assumed that WTP would be lower if mitigation and adaptation measures were to be implemented in forests not, or only rarely, used by respondents. As all proposed means for climate change mitigation and adaptation contribute to local forest ecosystem biodiversity, the results of the study advocate the realization of measures that potentially benefit both climate policy and regional conservation concerns,"],["dc.description.sponsorship","Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG Graduiertenkolleg) [1086]"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.3354/cr00803"],["dc.identifier.isi","000272135600005"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/17744"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Inter-research"],["dc.relation.issn","0936-577X"],["dc.title","User community preferences for climate change mitigation and adaptation measures around Hainich National Park, Germany"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI WOS2003Conference Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","199"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","207"],["dc.contributor.author","Bergmann, H."],["dc.contributor.author","Scheringer, J."],["dc.contributor.author","Gerowitt, B."],["dc.contributor.author","Isselstein, Johannes"],["dc.contributor.author","Marggraf, R."],["dc.date.accessioned","2017-09-07T11:51:14Z"],["dc.date.available","2017-09-07T11:51:14Z"],["dc.date.issued","2003"],["dc.identifier.gro","3147912"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5245"],["dc.language.iso","de"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.publisher","Gustav-Stresemann-Institut e.V."],["dc.publisher.place","Bonn"],["dc.relation.conference","Bedeutung der Wechselwirkungen Biosphäre-Atmosphäre für die nachhaltige Nutzung der Biosphäre und den Klimaschutz"],["dc.relation.eventend","2002-09-17"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Bonn"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2002-09-16"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Bedeutung der Wechselwirkungen Biosphäre-Atmosphäre für die nachhaltige Nutzung der Biosphäre und den Klimaschutz"],["dc.title","Erfolgsfaktoren im Natur- und Umweltschutz aus polit-ökonomischer Sicht"],["dc.type","conference_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details
