Thus, policies that enhance the appetite for rainforest preservation might be helpful to increase the participation rate in certification schemes. Our study aims to investigate ex-ante the effects of several promising policies on mitigating deforestation. To do so, we used an incentivized experiment which creates a conflict of short-term individual interests and long-term collective interests regarding deforestation. We examined the effects of three policies: price premiums, provision of environmental information, and contributor recognition. Our research took place in Jambi Province, Sumatra, and involved 636 smallholders. We found that price premiums and the provision of context-specific environmental information reduce rainforest transformation. However, there is an absence of significant effects for contributor recognition. Our results also can be used to estimate the participation of smallholders in more sustainable farming practices within the scheme of SPO certification."],["dc.format.extent","25"],["dc.identifier.ppn","1029482187"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/108104"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.publisher","SFB 990, University of Göttingen; GOEDOC, Dokumenten- und Publikationsserver der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen"],["dc.publisher.place","Göttingen"],["dc.relation","SFB 990: Ökologische und sozioökonomische Funktionen tropischer Tieflandregenwald-Transformationssysteme (Sumatra, Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C06: Zum Verständnis des Zertifizierungs- und Wiederanpflanzungsverhaltens indonesischer Kleinbauern"],["dc.relation.crisseries","EFForTS Discussion Paper Series"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Johann-Friedrich-Blumenbach-Institut für Zoologie und Anthropologie"],["dc.rights","CC BY-NC-ND 4.0"],["dc.subject.gro","Deforestation; Ex-ante policy evaluation; Framed field experiment; Palm oil certification; Social dilemma experiment"],["dc.subject.gro","sfb990_discussionpaperseries"],["dc.title","Encouraging rainforest preservation by smallholders"],["dc.title.subtitle","an ex-ante policy evaluation"],["dc.type","working_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2013-09Working Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.seriesnr","1"],["dc.contributor.author","Faust, H."],["dc.contributor.author","Schwarze, S."],["dc.contributor.author","Beckert, B."],["dc.contributor.author","Bruemmer, B."],["dc.contributor.author","Dittrich, C."],["dc.contributor.author","Euler, M."],["dc.contributor.author","Gatto, M."],["dc.contributor.author","Hauser-Schäublin, B."],["dc.contributor.author","Hein, J."],["dc.contributor.author","Holtkamp, A. Current literature mainly focuses on a single country context; however, this study involves more than one country. Hence, we could investigate whether the individual preferences of farmers from two countries with similar income level are the same. The preferences are key for the policymakers to make informed policy decisions regarding investments and acceptance of development programs. Our study involved 1,528 farmers. The risk and time preferences were elicited using incentivised experiments and simultaneously estimated following the joint-estimation-method by Andersen et al. (2008). Results show that the farmers in India show a higher level of risk aversion and lower discount rates, even though very high discount rates were encountered in both countries. For this purpose, the Just-Pope production function indicates production inputs’ influence on output risk and a Holt-Laury lottery is used to measure the producers’ risk attitude. We test whether more risk averse farmers use more risk-reducing and less risk-increasing production inputs. Therefore, we apply a unique data set which includes 185 small-scale farmers which are producing rubber on 260 plots on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The Just-Pope production function indicates that fertiliser usage has a risk-reducing effect, whereas herbicide usage and plot size have risk-increasing effects. For labour and plantation age, the influence on output risk is ambiguous. By including the outcome of a Holt- Laury lottery into the analysis, we found the expected result that more risk averse farmers use more (risk- reducing) fertiliser and less (risk-increasing) herbicides. While the expansion of oil palm in early stages was mainly driven by large private and public companies, it is expected that smallholders will outnumber large estates in the near future. For policy formulation it is hence important to better understand who these smallholders are and why they have started to cultivate oil palm. In this paper, we used a rich dataset collected in the province of Jambi, which is one of the most important production areas for oil palm, to analyse smallholders’ decision making by combining qualitative, quantitative, and experimental methods. We identified agricultural expertise, lacking flexibility in labour requirements, availability of seedlings, and investment costs as the major constraints for farmers to cultivate oil palm. Important reasons for oil palm cultivation are the higher returns to labour and the shorter immature phase of oil palm. We also showed that oil palm farmers are neither risk-averse nor risk-loving, rather, they appear to be risk-neutral."],["dc.format.extent","IV, 29"],["dc.identifier.gro","3147870"],["dc.identifier.ppn","824603850"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5200"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.publisher","SFB 990, University of Göttingen; GOEDOC, Dokumenten- und Publikationsserver der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen"],["dc.publisher.place","Göttingen"],["dc.relation","SFB 990: Ökologische und sozioökonomische Funktionen tropischer Tieflandregenwald-Transformationssysteme (Sumatra, Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | B | B10: Landschaftsbezogene Bewertung der ökologischen und sozioökonomischen Funktionen von Regenwald- Transformationssystemen in Sumatra (Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C01: Produktivität, Marktzugang und internationale Anbindung von kleinbäuerlicher Kautschuk- und Palmölerzeugung in der Provinz Jambi"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C02: Soziale Transformationsprozesse und nachhaltige Ressourcennutzung im ländlichen Jambi"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C03: Culture-Specific Human Interaction with Tropical Lowland Rainforests in Transformation in Jambi, Sumatra"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C04: Mitigating trade-offs between economic and ecological functions and services through certification"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C06: Zum Verständnis des Zertifizierungs- und Wiederanpflanzungsverhaltens indonesischer Kleinbauern"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C07: Einflussfaktoren von Landnutzungswandel und sozioökonomische Auswirkungen für ländliche Haushalte"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C08: Design effektiver Politikinstrumente zur Förderung nachhaltiger Landnutzung"],["dc.relation.crisseries","EFForTS Discussion Paper Series"],["dc.relation.ispartofseries","EFForTS Discussion Paper Series;11"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Johann-Friedrich-Blumenbach-Institut für Zoologie und Anthropologie"],["dc.rights","CC BY-ND 4.0"],["dc.subject","Smallholders crop choice oil palm rubber Indonesia"],["dc.subject.gro","Smallholders; crop choice; oil palm; rubber; Indonesia"],["dc.subject.gro","sfb990_discussionpaperseries"],["dc.title","Rubber vs. oil palm: an analysis of factors influencing smallholders’ crop choice in Jambi, Indonesia"],["dc.type","working_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dc.type.version","unpublished"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details
