These compounds were formed by the reaction of the tetrameric AlI compound [(Cp Al)4] with elemental selenium and tellurium, respectively. The driving force of this smooth reaction is the conversion from AlI to AlIII. For 3: triclinic, P1, a = 8.339 (3) A, b = 9.064 (2) A, c = 13.499 (4) A, CY = 88.38 (3)O, @ = 87.79 (4)O, y = 76.85 (2)O, V = 992.6 (5) A3, 2 = 2,and R = 3.92%. For 4a: monoclinic, P21/c, a = 10.876 (3) A, b = 16.79 (1) A, c = 13.865 (5) A, @ = 112.81 = 15.294 (3) A, @ = 92.20 (3)O, V = 1066.3 (4) A3, Z = 2, and R = 5.73%. A characteristic structural feature of all three derivatives is weak metal-fluorine interactions. A single X-ray structural analysis shows a folded polymeric structure for 1; the crystal lattice incorporates half of a 1,4-dioxane molecule per Tl atom. Compound (1) dimerises slowly in solution with elimination of Me3SiCl to yield a tricyclic system containing a central Ti2N2 ring (3). X-Ray analyses of these compounds show (1) and (3) to be monoclinic, space group P21/n, while (2) is triclinic, space group P.
