The development and implementation of such assistive technologies for eldercare raise manifold ethical, legal, and social questions. The discussion of these questions is influenced by theoretical perspectives and approaches from medical and nursing ethics, especially the principlist framework of autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice. Tying in with previous criticism, the present contribution is taking these principles as a starting point and as a frame of reference to be critically re-examined. It thus aims to outline how existing ethical frameworks need to be extended or reconsidered to capture the ethical issues posed by technological developments regarding care for older people. In a first step, we provide a brief overview of assistive technologies in eldercare according to their purposes and functions. In the next step, we discuss how the questions and problems raised by new technologies in eldercare call for an expansion, re-interpretation, and revision of the principlist framework. We underline that the inclusion of ethical perspectives from engineering and computer science as well as a closer consideration of socio-political dimensions and fundamental anthropological and praxeological questions are needed."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1007/s40656-021-00447-x"],["dc.identifier.pii","447"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/89834"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI Import GROB-469"],["dc.relation.eissn","1742-6316"],["dc.relation.issn","0391-9714"],["dc.title","Aging 4.0? This problem is particularly prevalent in the current boom of anti-ageing medicine. While the public demand for medical interventions which promise a longer, healthier and more active and attractive life has been increasing, public healthcare systems usually do not cover these products and services, thus leaving their allocation to the mechanisms of supply and demand on the free market. This situation raises the question on which basis the underlying preferences for and claims to a longer, healthier life should be evaluated. What makes anti-ageing medicine eligible for public funding? In this article, we discuss the role of anti-ageing medicine with regard to the scope and limits of public healthcare. We will first briefly sketch the basic problem of justifying a particular healthcare scheme within the framework of a modern liberal democracy, focusing on the challenge anti-ageing interventions pose in this regard. In the next section, we will present and discuss three possible solutions to the problem, essentialistic, transcendental, and procedural strategies of defining the scope of public healthcare. We will suggest a procedural solution adopting essentialistic and transcendental elements and discuss its theoretical and practical implications with regard to anti-ageing medicine."],["dc.description.sponsorship","German Federal Ministry of Education and Research [01GP0608]"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/j.1467-8519.2012.01960.x"],["dc.identifier.isi","000322723300001"],["dc.identifier.pmid","22500556"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/28994"],["dc.notes.status","zu prĂĽfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Wiley-blackwell"],["dc.relation.issn","0269-9702"],["dc.title","HOW DO WE WANT TO GROW OLD? In this paper, we wish to reassess one of its central premises-the idea of organ shortage. On the basis of theoretical considerations as well as a socioempirical examination of public attitudes, we will argue that this rhetoric has an economic subtext that imbues the debate with normative premises that have far-reaching social and ethical consequences and need to be made explicit and discussed."],["dc.description.sponsorship","EU [SAS6-CT-2003-510238]; European Commission"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1136/jme.2008.027953"],["dc.identifier.isi","000268508700006"],["dc.identifier.pmid","19644004"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/16184"],["dc.notes.status","zu prĂĽfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","B M J Publishing Group"],["dc.relation.issn","0306-6800"],["dc.title","\"One man's trash is another man's treasure': exploring economic and moral subtexts of the \"organ shortage' problem in public views on organ donation"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

Foucauldian gerontology provides some of the dominant theoretical perspectives on this trend in social and cultural theory. Proceeding from its interpretation and critique of anti-aging in terms of medicalization and responsibilization of aging, we explore by means of qualitative socio-empirical research how interested laypersons as well as non-professional users in the German context actually perceive of and deal with the medical claims and moral imperatives surrounding anti-aging medicine. The study is based on 12 focus groups and 20 narrative interviews (96 participants all included). They were conducted in Germany between 2011 and 2012, and analyzed by qualitative content analysis as well as comparative sequence analysis. The empirical findings indicate that in everyday life, interested laypersons and non-professional users employ different strategies for dealing with anti-aging products and services, corresponding to different degrees of affirmation and rejection. Four strategies could be identified: (a) medical optimism, (b) preventive maximalism, (c) ritualized well-being, and (d) considerate rejection. Also, each type was problematized and arguments against it were expressed. Overall, these findings show how our participants develop viable strategies to put the relevance of medical knowledge and moral imperatives for their own lives into perspective. This sheds light on laypersons' and users' agency that is, their active role and deliberative space in the uptake, adaptation, and integration of anti-aging into their personal life. These empirical findings contribute to an enriched picture of the actual practice of anti-aging in concrete national and socio-cultural settings. This can help to differentiate the evaluation and thus make its critique more context sensitive, adequate, and targeted. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We explored ideas and motives behind public attitudes toward organ donation and its commercialization in the context of recent academic and political debates on attempts to increase the number of donor organs by means of financial incentives. Methods. We analyzed 4 focus group discussions (FGs) conducted in Germany between 2005 and 2008 with various participants: (1) recipients of a cadaveric donation, (2) recipients of a living donation, (3) living organ donors, and (4) lay people (N((a-d)) = 30). In our analysis we used the method of qualitative content analysis to extract the major argument classes and moral viewpoints about organ donation and its commercialization. Results. We found a thorough concordance in the critical assessment of most commercial strategies over the 4 groups of participants. Slight deviations between groups were most likely due to different perspectives resulting from the various ways the groups were affected. Overall, we observed a strong tendency to assess the practice of organ procurement in terms of reciprocity. Conclusions. The current political and legal discourse neglects the central role of reciprocity for lay people and patients. Targeted legal and practical solutions should (re) consider strategies to integrate the highly valued idea of reciprocity in organ donation practice: for example, the club model and the paradigm of anonymity in cadaveric organ allocation."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1016/j.transproceed.2009.06.109"],["dc.identifier.isi","000269413200142"],["dc.identifier.pmid","19715963"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/16461"],["dc.notes.status","zu prĂĽfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Elsevier Science Inc"],["dc.publisher.place","New york"],["dc.relation.conference","17th Annual Meeting of the German-Transplantation-Society"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Bochum, GERMANY"],["dc.relation.issn","0041-1345"],["dc.title","Understanding Public Skepticism Toward Organ Donation and Its Commercialization: The Important Role of Reciprocity"],["dc.type","conference_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]
