Technologically, a type of such self-amplification drives free-electron lasers(4,5) and optical supercontinuum sources(6,7) whose radiation qualities, however, suffer from the stochastic origins(8-11). Through time-resolved observations, we identify intrinsic properties of these fluctuations that are hidden in ensemble measurements. We acquire single-shot spectra of modulation instability produced by laser pulses in glass fibre at megahertz real-time capture rates. The temporally confined nature of the gain physically limits the number of amplified modes, which form an anti-bunched arrangement as identified from a statistical analysis of the data. They therefore constitute ideal model systems for the investigation of the inherent frequency scalings of highly nonlinear and strong-field phenomena. Here, we present a comprehensive study of strong-field photoemission from individual metallic nanotips. Combining high local fields and variable-wavelength mid-infrared pulses, we investigate electron dynamics governed by the nanoscale confinement of the optical near-field. In particular, we characterize a transition to sub-cycle, field-driven electron acceleration.
