The distribution of fungal mycelium in wood was locally resolved and semiquantitatively recorded using FTIR microscopy combined with a focal plane array detector and image analysis. Cluster analysis revealed major differences between FTIR spectra recorded from wood fibers and empty vessel lumina and spectra from mycelium of both fungal species, irrespective of whether the fungi were grown on the surface of wood or inside vessel lumina.
