After the first recording all hearing-impaired infants were provided with hearing aids. We focused on three issues: (1) Are there different types of preverbal vocalizations in the vocal repertoire of normally hearing and hearing-impaired infants? (2) Do the vocal types emerge at similar age? (3) Does hearing impairment influence the acoustic structure of the preverbal vocalization types common to normally hearing and hearing-impaired infants? The study shows that both normally hearing and hearing-impaired infants have the same vocal repertoire. Except for babbling, there were no differences in the time of emergence of preverbal utterances. Structural differences could only be found in ‘cries’. In general, it seems that normal auditory input is not essential for the production of single preverbal utterances."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1159/000075326"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/114948"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI-Import GROB-602"],["dc.relation.eissn","1421-9972"],["dc.relation.issn","1021-7762"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Deutsches Primatenzentrum"],["dc.title","The Influence of Hearing Impairment on Preverbal Emotional Vocalizations of Infants"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2001Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","97"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","1"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Behaviour"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","116"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","138"],["dc.contributor.author","Jürgens, Uwe"],["dc.contributor.author","Fichtel, Claudia"],["dc.contributor.author","Hammerschmidt, Kurt"],["dc.date.accessioned","2017-11-13T14:08:20Z"],["dc.date.available","2017-11-13T14:08:20Z"],["dc.date.issued","2001"],["dc.description.abstract","There is general agreement that in non-human primates, the emotional state of a caller is reflected in the vocal structure. But only few studies describe call features characterizing such correlates. This is mainly due to the fact that it is difficult to identify the emotional state of a caller. In the present study, we analysed calls from a study (Jürgens, 1979) in which squirrel monkeys had been given the opportunity to control vocalization-eliciting brain stimulation. In this way, the aversive or hedonistic quality of the emotional state underlying the production of specific calls could be determined. 758 of the recorded calls, representing 8 different call types, given by 25 subjects, were analysed in order to find out whether differences in the degree of aversion are reflected by specific acoustic parameters. It was found that an increase in aversion is parallelled, depending upon the call type, by an upward shift of maximal energy in the power spectrum, an increase in frequency range and/or an increase in the ratio of nonharmonic to harmonic energy."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1163/15685390151067094"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/9938"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.title","On the Vocal Expression of Emotion.
