Abstract
Male bonding is the phenomenon that among coresiding adult males certain dyads develop affiliate relationships that are stronger, more equitable, and longer lasting than others. Male bonding occurs both in male philopatric and in male dispersal primate species. The evolution of male bonding can be linked to the evolution of rank-changing within-group coalitions, because males preferentially form coalitions with partners with whom they are closely bonded and on whom they can rely. The social support provided by male bonding can convey a buffer against social and environmental stress and can increase male reproductive success by promoting the attainment and the maintenance of high social status.
