Abstract
For the protection of ecosystem services, suitable economic instruments can play an influential role. By applying the 'Ecosystem Service Opportunities' (ESO) approach by Rode and Wittmer (2015) we identified four promising instruments for a case study in Karak Governorate in Jordan. Rewards for environmental stewardship, support for innovation and environmental education are the detected opportunity fields from which the detailed instruments arise. A qualitative mapping and 15 semi-structured stakeholder interviews describe the local situation and form the research basis of this work. Further, by analyzing restrictive socio-economic factors the author provides recommendations for similar approaches in the future. The recommendations are oriented towards the needs of the development agency GIZ that manages the Karak case study.
