Although monetary gains and ecological consequences of such changes in land-use have been extensively documented, little is known about nutritional and dietary impacts on farm households despite those households being the most affected by nutritional problems. Here, this research gap is addressed with a 2-year panel data of farm households from Jambi province in Indonesia, a hot spot of tropical rainforest conversion into oil palm plantation. I use endogenous switching regression to better account for selection bias and obtain counterfactual outcomes. Results show high levels of undernourishment and micronutrient inadequacy in farm households in Jambi. Non-adopters are more likely to be undernourished and micronutrients deficient, consume less diverse foods, and eat low quantities of fruits and vegetables. The counterfactual analysis shows that oil palm adoption leads to significantly greater household dietary diversity, higher calorie consumption, more fruit and vegetable consumption, and higher food expenditure in farm households. These positive dietary impacts are observed irrespective of whether households belong to transmigrant or local communities. Panel regression results further show that oil palm cultivation reduces the prevalence of undernourishment and, at the same time, increases the mean probability of adequacy of consumed fruits and vegetables and micronutrients. This impact, leading to better diets, however, is complex and not straightforward; several socioeconomic, demographic, and farm factors have different dietary impacts for adopters and non-adopters. The findings highlight important policy implications: farm households adopt and expand land-uses that provide greater dietary benefits. Thus, policy-makers interested in maintaining the tropical rainforests, regulating oil palm plantations, and tackling nutritional deficiencies in the rural tropics should not overlook these dietary benefits for farm households."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.3389/fsufs.2019.00075"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/116370"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation","SFB 990: Ökologische und sozioökonomische Funktionen tropischer Tieflandregenwald-Transformationssysteme (Sumatra, Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C07: Einflussfaktoren von Landnutzungswandel und sozioökonomische Auswirkungen für ländliche Haushalte"],["dc.relation.issn","2571-581X"],["dc.rights","CC BY 4.0"],["dc.subject.gro","sfb990_journalarticles"],["dc.title","Oil Palm Boom and Farm Household Diets in the Tropics"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2015Journal Article Research Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","10657"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","34"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","10662"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","112"],["dc.contributor.author","Sibhatu, Kibrom T."],["dc.contributor.author","Krishna, Vijesh V."],["dc.contributor.author","Qaim, Matin"],["dc.date.accessioned","2017-09-07T11:44:35Z"],["dc.date.available","2017-09-07T11:44:35Z"],["dc.date.issued","2015"],["dc.description.abstract","Undernutrition and micronutrient malnutrition remain problems of significant magnitude in large parts of the developing world. Improved nutrition requires not only better access to food for poor population segments, but also higher dietary quality and diversity. Because many of the poor and undernourished people are smallholder farmers, diversifying production on these smallholder farms is widely perceived as a useful approach to improve dietary diversity. However, empirical evidence on the link between production and consumption diversity is scarce. Here, this issue is addressed with household-level data from Indonesia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Malawi. Regression models show that on-farm production diversity is positively associated with dietary diversity in some situations, but not in all. When production diversity is already high, the association is not significant or even turns negative, because of foregone income benefits from specialization. Analysis of other factors reveals that market access has positive effects on dietary diversity, which are larger than those of increased production diversity. Market transactions also tend to reduce the role of farm diversity for household nutrition. These results suggest that increasing on-farm diversity is not always the most effective way to improve dietary diversity in smallholder households and should not be considered a goal in itself. Additional research is needed to better understand how agriculture and food systems can be made more nutrition-sensitive in particular situations."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1073/pnas.1510982112"],["dc.identifier.gro","3150299"],["dc.identifier.pmid","26261342"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/7048"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.relation","SFB 990: Ökologische und sozioökonomische Funktionen tropischer Tieflandregenwald-Transformationssysteme (Sumatra, Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C07: Einflussfaktoren von Landnutzungswandel und sozioökonomische Auswirkungen für ländliche Haushalte"],["dc.relation.issn","0027-8424"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Department für Agrarökonomie und Rurale Entwicklung"],["dc.relation.workinggroup","RTG 2654: Sustainable Food Systems (Related Publications)"],["dc.subject","Africa; Asia; food security; nutrition-sensitive food systems; small-scale farmers"],["dc.subject.gro","sfb990_journalarticles"],["dc.title","Production diversity and dietary diversity in smallholder farm households"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI PMID PMC2018Journal Article Research Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","1"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Food Policy"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","18"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","77"],["dc.contributor.author","Sibhatu, Kibrom T."],["dc.contributor.author","Qaim, Matin"],["dc.date.accessioned","2020-12-10T14:24:04Z"],["dc.date.available","2020-12-10T14:24:04Z"],["dc.date.issued","2018"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1016/j.foodpol.2018.04.013"],["dc.identifier.issn","0306-9192"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/72124"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI Import GROB-354"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Department für Agrarökonomie und Rurale Entwicklung"],["dc.title","Review: Meta-analysis of the association between production diversity, diets, and nutrition in smallholder farm households"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2019Journal Article Research Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Frontiers in Forests and Global Change"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","2"],["dc.contributor.affiliation","Darras, Kevin F. Oil palm monocultures have been criticized because of their reduced biodiversity compared to the forests they historically replaced, and because of their negative impact on soils, water, and climate. We experimentally test whether less intensive management schemes may enhance biodiversity and lessen detrimental effects on the environment while maintaining high yields. We compare reduced vs. conventional fertilization, as well as mechanical vs. chemical weed control (with herbicides) in a long-term, full-factorial, multidisciplinary experiment. We conducted the experiment in an oil palm company estate in Sumatra, Indonesia, and report the results of the first 2 years. We measured soil nutrients and functions, surveyed above- and below-ground organisms, tracked oil palm condition and productivity, and calculated plantation gross margins. Plants, aboveground arthropods, and belowground animals were positively affected by mechanical vs. chemical weed control, but we could not detect effects on birds and bats. There were no detectable negative effects of reduced fertilization or mechanical weeding on oil palm yields, fine roots, or leaf area index. Also, we could not detect detrimental effects of the reduced fertilization and mechanical weeding on soil nutrients and functions (mineral nitrogen, bulk density, and litter decomposition), but water infiltration and base saturation tended to be higher under mechanical weeding, while soil moisture, and microbial biomass varied with treatment. Economic performance, measured as gross margins, was higher under reduced fertilization. There might be a delayed response of oil palm to the different management schemes applied, so results of future years may confirm whether this is a sustainable management strategy. Nevertheless, the initial effects of the experiment are encouraging to consider less intensive management practices as economically and ecologically viable options for oil palm plantations."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.3389/ffgc.2019.00065"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62760"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation","SFB 990: Ökologische und sozioökonomische Funktionen tropischer Tieflandregenwald-Transformationssysteme (Sumatra, Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | A | A02: Wassernutzungseigenschaften von Bäumen und Palmen in Regenwald-Transformationssystemen Zusammenfassung"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | A | A03: Untersuchung von Land-Atmosphäre Austauschprozesse in Landnutzungsänderungs-Systemen"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | A | A05: Optimierung des Nährstoffmanagements in Ölpalmplantagen und Hochrechnung plot-basierter Treibhausgasflüsse auf die Landschaftsebene transformierter Regenwälder"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | A | A07: Räumlich-zeitliche Skalierung des Einflusses von Landnutzung und Klimawandel auf Landnutzungssysteme in Indonesien"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | B | B06: Taxonomische, funktionelle, phylogenetische und biogeographische Diversität vaskulärer Pflanzen in Regenwald-Transformationssystemen auf Sumatra (Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | B | B07: Functional diversity of mycorrhizal fungi along a tropical land-use gradient"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | B | B08: Struktur und Funktion des Zersetzersystems in Transformationssystemen von Tiefland-Regenwäldern"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | B | B09: Oberirdische Biodiversitätsmuster und Prozesse in Regenwaldtransformations-Landschaften"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | B | B13: Impact of management intensity and tree enrichment of oil palm plantations on below- and aboveground invertebrates in Sumatra (Indonesia)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C07: Einflussfaktoren von Landnutzungswandel und sozioökonomische Auswirkungen für ländliche Haushalte"],["dc.relation.eissn","2624-893X"],["dc.relation.issn","2624-893X"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Zentrum für Biodiversität und Nachhaltige Landnutzung"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Abteilung Bioklimatologie"],["dc.rights","CC BY 4.0"],["dc.rights.uri","http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],["dc.subject.gro","sfb990_journalarticles"],["dc.title","Reducing Fertilizer and Avoiding Herbicides in Oil Palm Plantations - Ecological and Economic Valuations"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2016Journal Article Research Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","12"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","1"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Rural 21"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","14"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","50"],["dc.contributor.author","Qaim, Matin"],["dc.contributor.author","Sibhatu, Kibrom T."],["dc.contributor.author","Krishna, Vijesh V."],["dc.date.accessioned","2017-11-24T15:52:40Z"],["dc.date.available","2017-11-24T15:52:40Z"],["dc.date.issued","2016"],["dc.fs.externid","789210"],["dc.fs.pkfprnr","23121"],["dc.identifier.fs","625675"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/10564"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","FactScience-Import"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.relation.issn","1866-8011"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Department für Agrarökonomie und Rurale Entwicklung"],["dc.title","Market access and farm household dietary diversity"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","unknown"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2020Journal Article Research Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","321"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","1"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Annual Review of Resource Economics"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","344"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","12"],["dc.contributor.author","Qaim, Matin"],["dc.contributor.author","Sibhatu, Kibrom T."],["dc.contributor.author","Siregar, Hermanto"],["dc.contributor.author","Grass, Ingo"],["dc.date.accessioned","2021-04-14T08:27:24Z"],["dc.date.available","2021-04-14T08:27:24Z"],["dc.date.issued","2020"],["dc.description.abstract","Rising global demand for vegetable oil during the last few decades has led to a drastic increase in the land area under oil palm.
