It consists of an herbaceous fringe, shrub and transition zone and each of these elements are several metres wide and mosaically interwoven. Although, in reality such forest edges are only seldom found. The question is therefore, where does this widely accepted (or manifested) image of the 'ideal forest edge' come from. In the literature there are mostly no details on this subject, at the most there are meagre and vague allusions. Usually a reference is made to real forest edge structures. However, in several studies it has been shown that forest edges are actually only a few meters wide. Wider edges occur only as a successional stage, but these are not stable. A further reference are forest edges in the natural landscape; but even here there are no indications of their similarity to the 'ideal forest edge'. Consequently, reference is often made to forest edges in the historical cultural landscape. However, under heavy grazing pressure both herbaceous fringe and shrub zone are not expected to have been present. The search for a concrete model of the 'ideal forest edge' is thus in vain. Besides these occasional references, attention has therefore been drawn to aesthetic motivetions, so that the search for role models has now to be extended to art. The search for the origins of these forest edge images reveals that real forest edges only very seldom show the 'ideal' zoning; they are usually narrow and steep. This is often true for natural forest edges such as water fringes or cliff edges. Also, a historical review gives no indication of formerly extensive shrub and fringe zones. Forest edges were, under intensive grazing of the landscape, possibly less distinct but usually without shrubs and fringes and so far removed from the 'ideal forest edge'. Contrary to this, one finds this ideal image regularly in the romantic landscape paintings and even more so in landscaped parks. Obviously here the handed down aesthetic motives were constitutive in the 'discovery 'of the ideal forest edge. The unreflected interchange between fantasy and reality inevitably leads to contradictions and discrepancies.
