He was read as a personal or subjectivist writer by a generation of poets who turned to “walk poetry” as one of their primary lyrical forms. Pound also wrote walk poems, but they did not foreground the open-ended freedom celebrated by postwar poets, rather the constraining influence exercised by a landscape already shaped by cultural traditions. It makes sense, I argue, to read Pound’s walk poems as expressions of confinement and freedom, and to explore the hidden constraints lurking behind the postwar lyrics that turn to mobility as a metaphor for personal freedom."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1057/978-1-137-60364-7_18"],["dc.identifier.gro","3146508"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/9158"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.publisher","Palgrave Macmillan US"],["dc.publisher.place","New York"],["dc.relation.doi","10.1057/978-1-137-60364-7"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-1-137-60282-4"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Walking and the Aesthetics of Modernity"],["dc.title","Pound, Peripatetic Verse, and the Postwar Liberal Aesthetic"],["dc.type","book_chapter"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

Scott Fitzgerald’s death in 1940. Many of the author’s contemporaries saw the novel as a celebration of the excesses of the Roaring Twenties. Midcentury scholars, however, began to point out that Gatsby’s materialism is actually idealistic, and that his accumulation of wealth to win back his lost love Daisy is an allegory of the American Dream. The chapter positions itself in this line of criticism by describing Gatsby as a tragic hero whose failure calls into question the myths of self-invention and success. The novel’s elegiac tone, focalized through the narrative perspective of Nick Carraway, places it in a tradition of Anglo-American modernism that addresses social change by mourning the loss of traditional cultural values."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1515/9783110422429-012"],["dc.identifier.gro","3146505"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/9155"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.publisher","De Gruyter"],["dc.publisher.place","Berlin, Boston"],["dc.relation.crisseries","Handbooks of English and American Studies"],["dc.relation.doi","10.1515/9783110422429"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-3-11-042242-9"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Handbook of the American Novel of the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries"],["dc.relation.ispartofseries","Handbooks of English and American Studies; 4"],["dc.title","F.
