It is based on a case study of Europe's largest media company, Bertelsmann AG, which grew from a mid-sized firm into a large multinational after 1950. Family-led until 1981, Bertelsmann is still family-controlled today. The article analyses the structure of the family, the remodelling of ownership and controlling rights, the methods of financing, and the role of non-family managers. On all levels, creative solutions were found that overcame traditional forms of patriarchal family capitalism and introduced strong elements of managerial capitalism into a family business. Managers enjoyed considerable space for autonomous action providing they did not challenge the ground rules set by the family."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1080/00076791.2012.744584"],["dc.identifier.isi","000322946200002"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/28995"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd"],["dc.relation.issn","0007-6791"],["dc.title","Blending personal and managerial capitalism: Bertelsmann's rise from medium-sized publisher to global media corporation and service provider, 1950-2010"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

It then outlines the post-1960 U.S. experience with financialization, including the reasons for the rise of financialization and its main consequences. The article will then look at Germany, a country with a very different entry point into the world of financialization, and ask when and to what degree the concept was adopted. Finally, a detailed case study of Siemens-one of Germany's largest industrial concerns-will explore how this icon of Germany Inc. adapted to the demands of financialization and coped with the external changes caused by globalization, deregulation, and digitalization."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1017/S0007680516000039"],["dc.identifier.eissn","2044-768X"],["dc.identifier.isi","000376094100005"],["dc.identifier.issn","0007-6805"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/73311"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI Import GROB-354"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Cambridge Univ Press"],["dc.relation.issn","2044-768X"],["dc.relation.issn","0007-6805"],["dc.title","Varieties of Financialization? In 1981 Harry Damrow, former Hoechst advertising chief and a leading member of post-war professional bodies in the advertising industry, wrote in his memoirs: 'In politics, National Socialism operated with lies and half-truths. In commercial advertising, however, it re-established clarity and truth and a level playing field for all.'(1) Similarly, in 1972 the head of German Coca-Cola's advertising department judged that advertising in 1933 had been prepared 'to sacrifice certain freedoms for the sake of creating a salutary order in which this hitherto unruly industry could thrive'.(2) this essay looks at the German advertising industry between 1933 and 1939. It focuses on the aims and methods as well as the successes and limits of the regime's regulation of advertising. In particular, it analyses the advertising industry's suppression, adaptation, and self-assertion. Finally, it takes up the ongoing discussion of the regime's modernising impact on German society.(3) Did the dictatorship have a dynamic or a retarding effect beyond 1945?"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1080/713999297"],["dc.identifier.isi","000181162300007"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/46708"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Frank Cass Co Ltd"],["dc.relation.issn","0007-6791"],["dc.title","'Times change and we change with them': The German advertising industry in the Third Reich - Between professional self-interest and political repression"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

This article makes the case that the focus of research on the German economy should shift from large corporate structures to these smaller firms. The classic Mittelstand model, which dominated the economy until about 1970, was characterized by identity of ownership and management, strong emotional investment by owners and staff, and an emphasis on continuity, paternalism, and independence. Beginning in the 1960s, this model was undermined by fundamental changes in the country's economic and sociocultural environment. In response, the firms abandoned a number of their traditional attributes, a process that led to the demise of some businesses and the regeneration of others. Although the modern form adopted by the surviving Mittelstand firms allows them to be less dependent on individual families, to enjoy more access to external capital, and to display more openness and international orientation, they can no longer rely on the prospect of long-term stability, as they did in the past."],["dc.identifier.isi","000239770200002"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/34257"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Harvard Business School"],["dc.relation.issn","0007-6805"],["dc.title","The end of family business?
