The majority of permanent pasture in the country is under state or community ownership, and these areas are of high natural and cultural, as well as economic importance for Romania. Whilst traditional governance systems of the commons are still partly intact, or at least within living memory here, new institutions are forming in response to substantial changes in agriculture and rural life that have been occurring, particularly since Romania’s accession to the EU in 2007. We describe the changing role of common pastures for local communities in the case study region of Târnava Mare in Southern Transylvania, Romania. The number of active users here is decreasing, and those who have more animals are increasingly grazing their animals on long-term leased or private land, thus effectively no longer participating in the commons. This is encouraged by the current system of relatively low prices for agricultural products and EU agricultural support payments, which for smallholders and larger farmers alike are now a major factor in the financial viability of farming in Romania. The future of the commons in the study region will hinge on the success of the communities to self-organise and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the changing rural context of pastoral commons use."],["dc.identifier.fs","599004"],["dc.identifier.purl","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gs-1/10775"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/60798"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","Merged from goescholar"],["dc.relation.issn","1875-0281"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Fakultät für Biologie und Psychologie"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Fakultät für Agrarwissenschaften"],["dc.rights","CC BY 3.0"],["dc.rights.uri","http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0"],["dc.subject.ddc","570"],["dc.title","Pastoral commons use in Romania and the role of the Common Agricultural Policy"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2016Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","125"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","1"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Ciencia e investigación agraria"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","137"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","43"],["dc.contributor.author","Huenchuleo, Carlos A"],["dc.contributor.author","Barkmann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Marggraf, Rainer"],["dc.date.accessioned","2020-12-10T18:47:43Z"],["dc.date.available","2020-12-10T18:47:43Z"],["dc.date.issued","2016"],["dc.description.abstract","A respondent's preference for non-market goods depends not only on the attributes of the goods but also on the respondent's attitude towards the goods being valued. Accounting for these characteristics may substantially improve the ability of stated choice models to represent preference heterogeneity. In this regard, we analyzed the influence of respondent attitudes on the valuation of river ecosystem quality attributes affected by pulp mill wastewater in two central Chilean watersheds. We applied the Choice Experiment (CE) method to assess preferences on river pollution risk, water quality effects, threatened species and the yield in local fisheries. The payment vehicle was an additional annual charge to the electricity bill. All three environmental attributes and the payment attribute were highly significant determinants of choice (P <= 0.001). A calculated mean WTP value for an optimistic policy scenario was 13 USD/year per household. As hypothesized, attitudes influenced stated respondent preferences with some differences between the two studied watersheds. Potentially, ecosystems show nonlinear responses to land-use intensification that would open management options with limited ecological losses but satisfying economic gains. However, multidisciplinary studies to quantify ecological losses and socioeconomic tradeoffs under different management options are rare. Here, we evaluate opposing land use strategies in cacao agroforestry in Sulawesi, Indonesia, by using data on species richness of nine plant and animal taxa, six related ecosystem functions, and on socioeconomic drivers of agroforestry expansion. Expansion of cacao cultivation by 230% in the last two decades was triggered not only by economic market mechanisms, but also by rarely considered cultural factors. Transformation from near-primary forest to agroforestry had little effect on overall species richness, but reduced plant biomass and carbon storage by ≈75% and species richness of forest-using species by ≈60%. In contrast, increased land use intensity in cacao agroforestry, coupled with a reduction in shade tree cover from 80% to 40%, caused only minor quantitative changes in biodiversity and maintained high levels of ecosystem functioning while doubling farmers' net income. However, unshaded systems further increased income by ≈40%, implying that current economic incentives and cultural preferences for new intensification practices put shaded systems at risk. We conclude that low-shade agroforestry provides the best available compromise between economic forces and ecological needs. Certification schemes for shade-grown crops may provide a market-based mechanism to slow down current intensification trends."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1073/pnas.0608409104"],["dc.identifier.gro","3148984"],["dc.identifier.scopus","2-s2.0-34247633507"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5623"],["dc.identifier.url","http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-34247633507&partnerID=MN8TOARS"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","Faust Crossref Import"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.relation.eissn","1091-6490"],["dc.relation.issn","0027-8424"],["dc.title","Tradeoffs between income, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning during tropical rainforest conversion and agroforestry intensification"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2010Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","114"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","2"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","GAIA - Ecological Perspectives for Science and Society"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","121"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","19"],["dc.contributor.author","Rajmis, Sandra"],["dc.contributor.author","Barkmann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Marggraf, Rainer"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-11-07T08:47:42Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-11-07T08:47:42Z"],["dc.date.issued","2010"],["dc.description.abstract","According to the German Advisory Council on Global Change, the so-called Pythia and Pandora risk types pose particular challenges to environmental management due to their potentially catastrophic nature. A conceptual framework for developing agri-environmental policy measures is presented, first in very broad lines (mandatory regulations, economic instruments and advisory measures) and subsequently focusing on economic instruments, and specifically, on market-oriented ones. Two criteria of choice between the measures are suggested: their contribution to improving the effectiveness of the policy; and the feasibility of their implementation. This is the framework used for analyzing agri-environmental measures in Israel. Israel currently implements a mix of mandatory regulations, economic instruments and advisory measures to promote the agri-environment. The use of additional economic instruments may improve the effectiveness of the policy. When comparing the effectiveness of various economic measures, we found that the feasibility of implementation of market-oriented instruments is greater, due to the Israeli public's preference for strengthening market orientation in the agricultural sector. Four market-oriented instruments were practiced in a pilot project conducted in an Israeli rural area. We found that in this case study, the institutional feasibility and acceptance by stakeholders were the major parameters influencing the implementation of the market-oriented instruments, whereas the instruments' contribution to enhancing the ecological or economic effectiveness were hardly considered by the stakeholders as arguments in favor of their use."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1007/s00267-011-9655-y"],["dc.identifier.isi","000290277200014"],["dc.identifier.pmid","21431445"],["dc.identifier.purl","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gs-1/6602"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/23133"],["dc.notes.intern","Merged from goescholar"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Springer"],["dc.relation.issn","0364-152X"],["dc.rights","Goescholar"],["dc.rights.uri","https://goescholar.uni-goettingen.de/licenses"],["dc.title","Agri-Environmental Policy Measures in Israel: The Potential of Using Market-Oriented Instruments"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI PMID PMC WOS2014Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","1014"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.issue","6"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","British Food Journal"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","1030"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","116"],["dc.contributor.author","Niens, Christine"],["dc.contributor.author","Strack, Micha"],["dc.contributor.author","Marggraf, Rainer"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-11-07T09:45:49Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-11-07T09:45:49Z"],["dc.date.issued","2014"],["dc.description.abstract","Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyse the parental risk perception of mycotoxins (mould toxins) related to child health in Germany. It ascertains the parental risk reduction behaviour operationalised as parental additional willingness to pay (aWTP) for special child products. It investigates the interrelationships between parental risk perceptions and risk reduction behaviour. Design/methodology/approach - Altogether, 771 questionnaires were sent to 17 day-care centres in Lower Saxony, Germany. A total of 238 questionnaires were completed. The Perceived Food Risk Index was used to identify the main dimensions of parental risk perception of mycotoxins. Open and closed questions measured aWTP for risk reduction and parental risk estimates. Findings - The respondents believed that mycotoxins posed a moderate health risk for children in Germany. However, parental risk assessment was found to be subjected to an optimistic bias. Nevertheless, the parents were willing to pay a premium to protect their children's health against mycotoxins. Parental risk perception of mycotoxins could be described by two dimensions named \"Dread\" and \"Control\". \"Dread\" and \"Control\" predicted aWTP for risk reduction as well as being involved in the genesis of optimistic bias. Research limitations/implications - Information regarding mycotoxins provided in the questionnaire probably influenced parental responses. This limits the generalisation of the findings. Originality/value - This research provides initial findings regarding parental risk perceptions of mycotoxins and its impact on risk reduction behaviour. The results are useful for the development of effective risk management and thus for the protection of child health."],["dc.description.sponsorship","Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1108/BFJ-10-2012-0260"],["dc.identifier.isi","000341656900009"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/34717"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Emerald Group Publishing Limited"],["dc.relation.issn","1758-4108"],["dc.relation.issn","0007-070X"],["dc.title","Parental risk perception of mycotoxins and risk reduction behaviour"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI WOS2010Journal Article [["dc.bibliographiccitation.firstpage","71"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.lastpage","82"],["dc.bibliographiccitation.volume","4"],["dc.contributor.author","Gamboa, Vladimir Gonzalez"],["dc.contributor.author","Barkmann, Jan"],["dc.contributor.author","Marggraf, Rainer"],["dc.date.accessioned","2019-07-09T11:40:45Z"],["dc.date.available","2019-07-09T11:40:45Z"],["dc.date.issued","2010"],["dc.description.abstract","A case study in South Ecuador serves as an example to understand the dynamics of adoption of agroforestry species. Against the background of various challenges faced by agriculture, the conference ad-dressed the question of recent theories and methods available and how they may benefit agricultural economics and social sciences research. The present article provides an overview of the conference program and summarizes the most important results and discussions. The conference started with two pre-conference activities which dealt with animal welfare and gravity models in international agricultural trade. The plenary session addressed the overall topic of the conference, i.e., new methods and challenges relevant for economic and social sciences in agriculture. During the conference, 36 submitted papers and 28 poster presentations provided insight into the overall topic from different perspectives. Also, state-of-the-art and future perspectives of evolutionary approaches in agricultural economics and social sciences as well as the most recent Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform were discussed in two self-organized sessions. Finally, a panel discussion at the end of the conference gave representatives from politics and science the opportunity to discuss the situation of agricultural research situated between methodological excellence and public perceptions. Most of the contributions summarized in this article are published in the conference proceedings (\"Schriften der Gesellschaft fur Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften des Landbaues e.V.\", Volume 50). We conclude that, in 2014, the Annual Conference of the German Society of Economic and Social Sciences in Agriculture again attracted much attention and provided convincing results and discussions. It impressively illustrated the extent to which new theories and methods are already being applied in agricultural economics and social sciences research today. The numerous discussions also revealed that this is a very dynamic field and that interesting developments can be expected in the future. Emphasis shall be put on understanding the many challenges which agriculture faces and on pointing out potential solutions or future perspectives.
