Policies to limit externalities need an effective, sustainable and efficient measure We use a business simulation game in a framed field experiment in Indonesia to test ex-ante different incentives for reducing such negative externalities. This setting allows inclusion of adequate contextual features, required for reasonable ex-ante evaluation of policy measures. The different designs of the test incentives (either a reward or punishment) varied in their magnitude and probability of occurrence but with constant effects on expected income. Results show that participants react differently to these incentives, indicating that the design can contribute significantly to effectiveness, sustainability or efficiency. A high reward with a low probability was found to be the most effective and sustainable incentive. Thus, policies that enhance the appetite for rainforest preservation might be helpful to increase the participation rate in certification schemes. Our study aims to investigate ex-ante the effects of several promising policies on mitigating deforestation. To do so, we used an incentivized experiment which creates a conflict of short-term individual interests and long-term collective interests regarding deforestation. We examined the effects of three policies: price premiums, provision of environmental information, and contributor recognition. Our research took place in Jambi Province, Sumatra, and involved 636 smallholders. We found that price premiums and the provision of context-specific environmental information reduce rainforest transformation. However, there is an absence of significant effects for contributor recognition. Our results also can be used to estimate the participation of smallholders in more sustainable farming practices within the scheme of SPO certification."],["dc.format.extent","25"],["dc.identifier.ppn","1029482187"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/108104"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.publisher","SFB 990, University of Göttingen; GOEDOC, Dokumenten- und Publikationsserver der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen"],["dc.publisher.place","Göttingen"],["dc.relation","SFB 990: Ökologische und sozioökonomische Funktionen tropischer Tieflandregenwald-Transformationssysteme (Sumatra, Indonesien)"],["dc.relation","SFB 990 | C | C06: Zum Verständnis des Zertifizierungs- und Wiederanpflanzungsverhaltens indonesischer Kleinbauern"],["dc.relation.crisseries","EFForTS Discussion Paper Series"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Johann-Friedrich-Blumenbach-Institut für Zoologie und Anthropologie"],["dc.rights","CC BY-NC-ND 4.0"],["dc.subject.gro","Deforestation; Ex-ante policy evaluation; Framed field experiment; Palm oil certification; Social dilemma experiment"],["dc.subject.gro","sfb990_discussionpaperseries"],["dc.title","Encouraging rainforest preservation by smallholders"],["dc.title.subtitle","an ex-ante policy evaluation"],["dc.type","working_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

In different countries worldwide it has been shown that one way consumers want to support the energy transition is by switching to green electricity. However, few people make the leap from their intention to a buying decision. This study explores parameters that influence whether German consumers would hypothetically decide to switch to a green electricity tariff.\r\n \r\n \r\n Methods\r\n A quota-representative online survey including a discrete choice experiment with 371 German private households was conducted in 2016. For the econometric analysis, a generalized multinomial logit model in willingness-to-pay space was employed, enabling the estimation of WTP values to be as realistic as possible.\r\n \r\n \r\n Results\r\n The results show that consumers’ decision whether or not to make the switch to green energy is mainly influenced by the source of green energy, whether a person can outsource the switching process, and a person’s attitude towards the renewable energy sources levy that currently exist in Germany.\r\n \r\n \r\n Conclusions\r\n The findings indicate that politics should focus on supporting wind and solar energy as German consumers prefer these sources over biogas. As the results suggest, the EEG levy is a reason why consumers have lower WTP for switching to a green tariff. Therefore, a switching bonus with a specifically “framed” bonus in the amount of the current EEG levy could be a promising strategy for the increase of green energy tariff acceptance. Furthermore, attention should be given to psychological and behavioral aspects, as the results indicate that these factors influence the consumer’s choice for a green electricity tariff."],["dc.description.sponsorship","Open-Access-Publikationsfonds 2021"],["dc.identifier.citation","Energy, Sustainability and Society. 2021 May 19;11(1):15"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1186/s13705-021-00291-8"],["dc.identifier.pii","291"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/87878"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/112730"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","DOI Import DOI-Import GROB-441"],["dc.relation.eissn","2192-0567"],["dc.rights","CC BY 4.0"],["dc.rights.holder","The Author(s)"],["dc.subject","Energy transition"],["dc.subject","Green energy"],["dc.subject","Tariff switch"],["dc.subject","Discrete choice experiment"],["dc.subject","Generalized multinomial logit model"],["dc.subject","WTP space"],["dc.title","Analyzing German consumers’ willingness to pay for green electricity tariff attributes: a discrete choice experiment"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dc.type.version","published_version"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

Additional reservations about the reliability of the results regarding the risk attitude measurement arise from the fact that most studies are based on convenience groups, such as students or businessmen in developing countries. With this in mind, we systematically compare different measuring methods to answer the question how the choice of method affects the results. Moreover, we compare the risk preferences of German farmers with those of students and Kazakhstani farmers to investigate whether farmers' risk preferences can be approximated through those of convenience groups. The methods applied comprise an incentive-compatible Holt-and-Laury-lottery as well as two psychometric methods. Results show that students respond consistently across all three elicitation methods whereas German and Kazakhstani farmers are more inconsistent. Significant differences exist in the responses of German students and German farmers. The comparison of risk preferences between German and Kazakhstani farmers, however, reveals significant similarities with respect to the psychometric methods."],["dc.description.sponsorship","Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/j.1467-8489.2012.00620.x"],["dc.identifier.isi","000339379300003"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/32998"],["dc.notes.status","zu prüfen"],["dc.notes.submitter","Najko"],["dc.publisher","Wiley-blackwell"],["dc.relation.issn","1467-8489"],["dc.relation.issn","1364-985X"],["dc.title","Measuring the risk attitude of decision-makers: are there differences between groups of methods and persons?"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","yes"],["dc.type.status","published"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]
