Two treatments of a long‐term grazing experiment with heifers were investigated: extensive continuous grazing (EG) with a target sward height of 10 cm and intensive continuous grazing (IG) with a target sward height of 5 cm. Compressed sward height and related herbage mass (HM), dominant plant species and stage of development of phenology were determined at weekly or twice weekly intervals at fixed measuring points. The results demonstrated a strong variability in sward height and HM, especially on the EG treatment. The botanical composition of the standing herbage differed between treatments and between patches of different heights within the same treatment. In areas with a short sward, the herbage was predominantly composed of Agrostis capillaris, Festuca rubra and Trifolium repens. It was more evenly composed and also included taller growing species, such as Alopecurus pratensis and Galium mollugo, in areas with a tall sward. The area potentially available for reproductive development was high in the EG treatment and low in the IG treatment. The method employed proved suitable to provide a detailed description of the dynamics of the sward structure."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/j.1365-2494.2003.00387.x"],["dc.identifier.gro","3149208"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5862"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","Isselstein Crossref Import"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.relation.issn","0142-5242"],["dc.title","Studying spatial and temporal dynamics of sward structure at low stocking densities: the use of an extended rising-plate-meter method"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

Such grazing creates a mosaic pattern of patches of variable defoliation and resulting sward height and structure. An extended rising-plate-meter method was developed to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of the grass sward and the resulting pasture and animal performance. Along permanent transect lines, a high number of fixed points is established and the following recordings are made repeatedly during the grazing season: compressed sward height, dominating plant species, development of the plant (vegetative, reproductive growth). Additional sampling at random points was used to establish a relationship between sward height and herbage mass. The nutritive value of the herbage samples was analysed. Live weights of grazers and quality of ingested herbage were measured. The data were analysed to provide information on the variability of the amount and the quality of the herbage on offer, the percentage of different dominating species in the different grazing patches, the contribution of the different patches to the nutrition of the grazing animals, and the percentage of patches with reproductive plant growth which indicates the opportunity for seedling recruitment."],["dc.identifier.gro","3148066"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5411"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.publisher","Bulgarian Association for Grassland and Forage Production (BAGFP)"],["dc.publisher.place","Pleven, Bulgaria"],["dc.relation.conference","12th Symposium of the European Grassland Federation"],["dc.relation.crisseries","Grassland Science in Europe"],["dc.relation.eventend","2003-05-28"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Pleven, Bulgaria"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2003-05-26"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Optimal forage systems for animal production and the environment.
