Expression of the nreB gene was specifically induced by nickel and conferred nickel resistance on both A. xylosoxidans 31A and Escherichia coli. E. coli cells expressing nreB showed reduced accumulation of Ni2+, suggesting that NreB mediated nickel efflux.
