This paper aims at closing this gap by firstly quantifying the relevant policies in an indicator of export restrictive policy. Subsequently, the effects of that are tested on estimated realized and GARCH volatility in VAR-X models where various wheat price volatilities are allowed to be endogenously determined. In a second step, the impacts of export controls during times of market turmoil are assessed in asymmetric volatility models. This strategy succinctly reveals the effects of export controls along the policy, frequency, country and time dimensions providing a detailed set of evidence. It is found that, most pronounced effects on wheat price volatility stem from long-term quotas. Similarly, longer term prohibitions of some countries have impacted wheat price fluctuation as well. On the contrary, long term tax strategies are shown to not significantly impact wheat price volatility. However, during times of market turmoil all three considered export restrictions have particularly contributed to wheat price volatility. Strengthened and more binding WTO regulation could have led to significantly less food price volatility, especially in times of food price crisis, such as recently experienced during the 2007/08 and 2010/11 episodes."],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/11969"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.preprint","yes"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.relation.conference","57. It also explores the direct effect of related product diversification on export performance and its role as a moderator in the relationship between geographic diversification and export performance. By employing panel trade data of 279 purely exporting firms over a six-years period (2010–2015), we found that both intra- and inter-regional diversification have an inverted U-shaped relationship with export performance, where moderate levels of diversification have positive effects on export performance, but higher levels may be counterproductive. Results also showed that related product diversification has a positive effect on firm export performance and a negative moderating effect on the relationship between inter-regional diversification and export performance. In the case of intra-regional diversification, we did not find any moderating effect from product diversification. By focusing on firms from the agricultural sector based in an emerging economy, this study offers practical implications for firm managers, trade organizations and private export associations, that may also be applicable to other export-based activities and emerging economies."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1016/j.foodpol.2019.101730"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/62980"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.relation.issn","0306-9192"],["dc.relation.orgunit","Zentrum für Biodiversität und Nachhaltige Landnutzung"],["dc.title","Effects of intra- and inter-regional geographic diversification and product diversification on export performance: Evidence from the Chilean fresh fruit export sector"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.subtype","original_ja"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2012Working Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.seriesnr","1206"],["dc.contributor.author","Prehn, Sören"],["dc.contributor.author","Brümmer, Bernhard"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-01-29T15:09:56Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-01-29T15:09:56Z"],["dc.date.issued","2012"],["dc.description.abstract","The emergence of 'New New Trade Theory' fundamentally changed the thinking of international trade, and it is now at the heart of science. Here, we are going to take up the discussion of Golpinath et al. [2007], looking at whether 'New New Trade Theory' is applicable to agriculture. Revisiting the recent literature, we can find new theoretical and methodological evidence for its importance: the concepts of 'New New Trade Theory' will impact the modelling of structural change in agriculture and of agricultural trade. Farm productivity and agricultural trade cannot be seen anymore as detached from one another; both concepts are interrelated. We claim that 'New New Trade Theory' and its concepts will become standard for agriculture, too."],["dc.identifier.issn","1865-2697"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/11893"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.publisher","Univ., Department für Agrarökonomie und Rurale Entwicklung"],["dc.publisher.place","Göttingen"],["dc.relation.crisseries","Diskussionsbeiträge (Department für Agrarökonomie und Rurale Entwicklung Göttingen)"],["dc.title","A critical judgement of the applicability of 'New New Trade Theory' to agriculture: Structural change, productivity, and trade"],["dc.type","working_paper"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details2011Monograph [["dc.contributor.author","Prehn, Sören"],["dc.contributor.author","Brümmer, Bernhard"],["dc.date.accessioned","2018-01-08T16:39:24Z"],["dc.date.available","2018-01-08T16:39:24Z"],["dc.date.issued","2011"],["dc.identifier.doi","10.4126/98-004394890"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/11570"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.publisher","Department für Agrarökonomie und Rurale Entwicklung"],["dc.publisher.place","Göttingen"],["dc.title","Estimation issues in disaggregate gravity trade models"],["dc.type","book"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]Details DOI2019Journal Article Research Paper [["dc.bibliographiccitation.journal","European Review of Agricultural Economics"],["dc.contributor.author","Fiankor, Dela-Dem Doe"],["dc.contributor.author","Flachsbarth, Insa"],["dc.contributor.author","Masood, Amjad"],["dc.contributor.author","Brümmer, Bernhard"],["dc.date.accessioned","2019-07-24T08:20:17Z"],["dc.date.available","2019-07-24T08:20:17Z"],["dc.date.issued","2019"],["dc.description.abstract","In global agricultural value-chains, private food standards are proliferating. Yet, their trade effects remain poorly understood. This paper assesses the effect of GlobalGAP certification on exports of apples, bananas and grapes. We estimate a structural gravity model using a global dataset of certified producers and the share of certified land area in total harvest area. While our results confirm GlobalGAP standards as catalysts to trade, we find that the trade-enhancing effect varies across products and destination markets.
