Two treatments of a long‐term grazing experiment with heifers were investigated: extensive continuous grazing (EG) with a target sward height of 10 cm and intensive continuous grazing (IG) with a target sward height of 5 cm. Compressed sward height and related herbage mass (HM), dominant plant species and stage of development of phenology were determined at weekly or twice weekly intervals at fixed measuring points. The results demonstrated a strong variability in sward height and HM, especially on the EG treatment. The botanical composition of the standing herbage differed between treatments and between patches of different heights within the same treatment. In areas with a short sward, the herbage was predominantly composed of Agrostis capillaris, Festuca rubra and Trifolium repens. It was more evenly composed and also included taller growing species, such as Alopecurus pratensis and Galium mollugo, in areas with a tall sward. The area potentially available for reproductive development was high in the EG treatment and low in the IG treatment. The method employed proved suitable to provide a detailed description of the dynamics of the sward structure."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/j.1365-2494.2003.00387.x"],["dc.identifier.gro","3149208"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5862"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","Isselstein Crossref Import"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.relation.issn","0142-5242"],["dc.title","Studying spatial and temporal dynamics of sward structure at low stocking densities: the use of an extended rising-plate-meter method"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

In Europe extensive grazing by livestock is considered an appropriate management to conserve biodiversity value and to limit shrub encroachment. However, little is known about the influence of shrubs on agronomic values. A gradient analysis of shrub‐invaded temperate grasslands (from shrub‐free to pioneer forest) in Germany was carried out to test the hypothesis that herbage mass and variables describing nutritive value of herbage decrease with increasing shrub encroachment. The herbage mass of dry matter (DM), variables describing the nutritive value of herbage, composition of the vegetation and mean of Ellenberg’s indicator values were analysed with respect to the extent of shrubs. There was a reduction of herbage mass of DM from 3570 to 210 kg ha−1 with increasing shrub encroachment. Metabolizable energy concentration of herbage ranged from 8·9 to 10·2 MJ kg−1 DM and crude protein concentration from 72 to 171 g kg−1 DM, both measures being positively correlated with shrub occurrence. Increasing shrub occurrence was associated with a decrease in water‐soluble carbohydrates concentration (from 151 to 31 g kg−1) and a reduction in the indicator ‘forage value’. The results indicate a potentially large agronomic value for shrub‐encroached temperate grasslands."],["dc.identifier.doi","10.1111/j.1365-2494.2009.00690.x"],["dc.identifier.gro","3149180"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5834"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.intern","Isselstein Crossref Import"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.relation.issn","0142-5242"],["dc.title","Herbage mass and nutritive value of herbage of extensively managed temperate grasslands along a gradient of shrub encroachment"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","unknown"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]

We present the results of a field experiment aimed at determining the impact of sward structural parameters on the estimation of dry biomass yield and forage quality in grasslands based on spectrometric data. Using a portable spectrometer, we measured the red edge inflection point (REIP) of swards of different species composition at three dates following fertilizer application. We analysed the explanatory power of REIP, plant species, sward height and percent ground cover of green foliage for forage quality parameters and yield. We additionally analysed the effect of sward canopy structure on the predictability of yield for individual species. Our results indicate plant species to be an important factor for the prediction of both yield and forage quality. We also found evidence that biomass distribution across sward height layers and percent ground cover of green foliage are further factors to be considered for the estimation of grassland yield based on spectrometric measurement."],["dc.identifier.gro","3148052"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5395"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.publisher","EGF"],["dc.relation.conference","24th General Meeting of the European Grassland Federation"],["dc.relation.crisseries","Grassland Science in Europe"],["dc.relation.eventend","2012-06-07"],["dc.relation.eventlocation","Lublin, Poland"],["dc.relation.eventstart","2012-06-03"],["dc.relation.isbn","978-83-89250-77-3"],["dc.relation.ispartof","Grassland – a European Resource? Temperate grasslands in Europe make an important contribution to the biodiversity of agricultural landscapes. The species and community diversity of grasslands is a result of a traditional extensive grassland management interacting with a broad range of site conditions. Until the early decades of the last century, grassland sites were hardly ameliorated and the agronomic potential was generally low, depending on the fertility of the soils. Later on the production from grassland was markedly improved by regular fertilisation, by liming and by artificial drainage of wet sites. Correspondingly, the stocking rates and the cutting frequency increased. Thus, biodiversity strongly decreased, and unimproved species-rich swards only persisted on a low percentage of the total grassland area. The preservation of the remaining species-rich grassland is a primary goal of nature conservation. The continuation of traditional ways of grassland management that would best preserve biodiversity is often not compatible with the requirements of intensive livestock production. Therefore, this grassland is at risk of being abandoned from agricultural use. There is a need to identify and develop improved management measures that better integrate biodiversity and agronomy targets of species-rich grassland farming. In addition, compensation payments for farmers are required to support grass production on species-rich swards. Apart from the unimproved species-rich grassland, there is an increasing area of now de-intensified species-poor grassland which can be managed to increase biodiversity. Grazing at a low stocking rate seems to have the potential to facilitate the restoration of diverse swards and to support reasonable individual performances of the grazing animals."],["dc.identifier.gro","3148118"],["dc.identifier.uri","https://resolver.sub.uni-goettingen.de/purl?gro-2/5469"],["dc.language.iso","en"],["dc.notes.status","final"],["dc.notes.submitter","chake"],["dc.title","Agronomic aspects of biodiversity targeted management of temperate grasslands in Europe – A review"],["dc.type","journal_article"],["dc.type.internalPublication","yes"],["dc.type.peerReviewed","no"],["dspace.entity.type","Publication"]]
